This is one of those ancient Surrey parish churches which has never been accompanied by a village. The horrible modern settlement nearby grew from some cottages around a small common (now the village green).
The most important thing here (actually down a footpath going south-west) is the Holy Well of St John the Baptist. This is a natural chalybeate spring, thought to have been used for baptisms by Christians under the Roman Empire and, as such, the oldest Christian monument in Surrey.
