I have been a frequent customer, but that ended today when I went in to enjoy my regular breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast. The cafe was busy, but there were two empty tables inside, a couple outside in the sunshine, and most of the larger tables had a single person sitting at them
A group of 3 lads ordered and sat down at the larger free table, and I paid £6.85 for my regular breakfast, before sitting down at the remaining free table (which is about 2ft 6 across).
An elderly gentleman with a stick came in after me, ordered something or other, and was asked whether this was to eat in or take away; when he confirmed that it was to eat in, he was shown to the small table at which I was sitting, without any reference to me or asking whether I minded. I suggested that they might like to give him my breakfast as well, and walked out.
I am sure the chap was a perfectly nice person, and that I might even have enjoyed his company. But to not ask if I minded was in my opinion rude, and destroyed the whole experience for me.
And so here is the point: there are 3 supermarkets in Nailsworth, and I am quite capable of making scrambled eggs on toast in less time than it takes me to walk to The Coffee Pot. I don't go there for the scrambled eggs - I go there for the experience, and that's why I am prepared to pay £6.85 for a breakfast that I could make myself for 68p.
Common courtesy and even the slightest civility would surely suggest that either the chap who came in after me should have been directed to one of the vacant tables outside (its a lovely day today), or perhaps even to one of the larger tables which was only partially occupied, rather than unceremoniously planted on the tiny table I was sitting at without so much as a "by your leave".
Your mileage may differ, but I won't be back
