Starting with the good - Once you can battle past the reception, the doctors have always been very good. They listen, they ask all the right questions and make sensible treatment plans. They are supportive and seem caring. A couple of encounters with nurses have also been very positive.
Now the bad - The reception! Not all - a couple of reception ladies are good and sensible. But the others are simply obstructive. They won't let you book in with doctors, they make frequent mistakes with prescriptions and paperwork, they lose letters handed in personally, and they are always arrogant and rude. They make absolutely ludicrous, non-sensical, baffling suggestions to a problem you call about, to the point that you lose your temper. The most scary part for me is that they even try to casually impart clinical advice, along the lines of 'If I were you, I would do xyz...' - this is appalling and dangerous. I have heard tons of similar stories from other neighbours and friends.
Unfortunately, poor workplace practice is filtered down from the top. I have come to understand that the practice manager is part of the problem, and complaint letters handed in or posted tend to disappear (this practice has very poor IT systems in place). So this online review is an appeal to the doctors of this surgery - to change something before a catastrophe happens. I am young, mobile, assertive, and NHS-savvy, so I can advocate for myself and fight for safe healthcare. But many others are vulnerable and cannot.
Whereas clinical triaging, when practiced by clinical staff, is an integral part of clinical practice, there is a limit to how much triaging non-clinical staff can do within their limited understanding of a vast and complicated subject. At this practice, this triaging has been turned into a power tool for a few, to assert control through deterring patients. The problem could be systemic, with the general workplace culture, or with the training, or with high workloads. Whatever it is, it needs resolving.
We were with other practices over the last 10 years and never had a problem. Now, my family are seriously considering moving out of the area just to leave this practice.
