I am a client on 1stDibs, I’ve been always very happy with the way my purchases happened.
April 3rd 2020 I’ve made an offer on the platform to purchase a Philip Arctander Sheepskin Clam Chair, 1950’s to Dagmar Design London at US$11,000.
The response from the seller Mr. Aaron Fitzgedald was negative to my price offered, his counter offer was US$12,885,58.
From that counter offer, I replied that unfortunately my budget was not allowing me to spend much more than my offer and that I will pass for this time.
From that moment, Mr. Fitzgedald didn’t let it go, I received an extra US$400 discount telling me that 1stDibs was giving coupons away that he will give me one and somehow the offer changed to GBP and became £9,875 + shipping.
I again said that I will pass.
After many more messages, Mr. Fitzgedald suggested to send me some Sheepskin samples and a collectors catalogue book (that I never received).
I received the sheepskin along with a letter suggesting to make the sale directly without going through 1stDibs, telling me that the platform charge a large commissions.
The offer went back to US$ at $11,500 + shipping.
I told him I will think about it.
We finally exchanged our mobile No and on June 8th 2020, we agreed to (changing currency again now to Eur) €10,200 + shipping at €200 for a total €10400.
€10200 is equal to $12,600 which is very close to his first offer on 1stDibs at $12,885.58.
The chair arrived at the address requested August 1st 20 with a big bump.
After multiple messages, emails Mr. Fitzgedald finally replied October 27th 20.
The explanation is that the bump is normal, that this is an old piece and while reupholstering the bump came and that nothing could be done.
I then requested a conservator report and condition report prior to shipment and a certificate of authenticity.
At this day January 15th 2021, I didn’t get any of my requests from Mr. Fitzgedald.
I found this all story very manipulative, with a lot of shenanigans , a lie on authenticity of the goods not to mention that if this piece is a fake, I paid a lot of money for it.
Aaron and Mark have been consistently knowledgeable and helpful, with rapid delivery of in-stock items by a careful and polite delivery company.
We would not hesitate to purchase additional items from Dagmar, and indeed they would always be our first port of call for mid-century furniture.
Thank you, Aaron, Milena, and Mark. We look forward to continue to work with you in the future.
