It's funny. Sometimes things are just "right".

I stayed at Highwaymans in Bury St Edmunds for one night on business. I just wanted a good value bed for the night and a breakfast. Some hotels can be a bit impersonal so on occasions like this I go for a B&B.

My criteria for a great B&B are simple: comfy bed, decent shower, good breakfast, friendly owners.

This B&B ticks all of those boxes admirably.

Add to the list that it is in a quiet spot (all too often I've gone to B&Bs that have been in noisy areas) and it made for a very pleasant stay.

It is well signed off the road and through the farm. I know other reviewers have commented on the long drive. It certainly isn't short - but I walked it to go to the pub for my evening meal and it was an easy wander. To the pub at a gentle amble was about 35 minutes.

Husband and wife, Adam and Juliet, run a clean and airy B&B that I found comfortable and welcoming. They gave me a good suggestion for my evening pub meal and made sure that I had everything I needed. Breakfast was well cooked. Shower was nice and hot, with a good flow. Bed was warm and comfy. That's all I want from a B&B right there.

Why the title to this review? Well we were chatting about how some people want a "hotel" and they are a B&B. Highwaymans is their family home as well as their business. That's unlike a hotel in so many little ways. As I said at the top - one of my criteria for a good B&B is friendly owners. Definitely a big tick there.

If you are looking for a well located B&B to explore Suffolk you won't go far wrong.

Highwayman's owners recently kindly sponsored a night in their lovely bury st edmunds b&b as a prize for the Risby Primary School fund raising ball. We were fortunate to win the draw and elected to use the prize close to my wife's birthday. On hearing about the occasion Juliet suggested we could invite a few friends for a small celebration as we live in the area.
They ended up catering for 10 of us at a very reasonable price providing a superb 3 course meal with coffees in their functioning art gallery. Juliet and Adam did the food preparation and Juliet's delightful teenage brother and sister (twins) waited on us all evening. The whole family went out of their way to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
The guest house rooms are comfortable and clean. Set on a working farm the rural views, walks and surroundings are stunning.
We can highly recommend Highwaymans B&B / Hotel for a stay or an occasion such as we had.

We stayed at the weekend and couldn't have been happier. It's clean and quiet and in a beautiful spot. We had a huge family room and there was a lovely large dining table so we could all eat together as a family. Highly recommended.

What can I say? Nothing bad that's for sure!
Such a great place to stay. Hosts were friendly and welcoming.
My room was huge (room 2) and had everything I need including free wifi.
It's set in a beautiful location, with clean and tidy grounds. I thoroughly enjoyed my nights stay here and will definitely come back for a personal stay and not just a business booking.
This is a great place to stay. Take me word for it.

Poor cleanliness, I had someone else’s razor left in the shower, pubic hair on the side of the bath. Generally unclean, such a shame as it’s set in amazing grounds and just needs some attention to detail and a cooked breakfast would be great but disappointing.

Really great clay shooting venue! I took a 2 hour drive up to Highwayman's for a 150 clay event and I'm glad I did! Fantastic grounds, well set out targets of different complexity levels ticking off every type possible! Really enjoyed the day, everything went smoothly. I'd recommend perhaps investing in a card machine as I didn't have cash and there's no local shops for withdrawal near by.

Only there for a couple hours and decided we had to leave. Couple of reasons were the Air Force ended up having on base accommodations which I was required to use and the other was there was no working WiFi. Additionally when I explained we had to leave and asked for a refund for an entire weeks stay not being used, I was told there was a no refund policy. There weere also no opinions for any dining what so ever in the area without transportation. Overall was not what I had expected from reading the other reviews.

We held an after funeral event (wake) here recently and it was absolutely lovely. Our sister passed away and we were looking for the right place to invite people to come to after the funeral. The room looked lovely and the food for the buffet was delicious. We were very comfortable and relaxed. Thank you to Juliet and Claire for making it so nice.
