Stuffed with history, nice mini castle, you can climb to the roof ! Strange location next to a river, slap bang in middle of industrial estate, next to a very large travellers site, across from a big pub and set in beautiful green tree grassy area. Good parking but be careful not to drive down the toll road (yes, they still exist !) Good day out as part of a small tour.

There isn't much here but it's an unexpected beauty in Hoddesdon. I'm not sure if the gatehouse itself is ever open but the grounds are very pretty especially on a clear day

Open only a few days each year. Free entry but suggested donation of £1.

Ground floor has 2 rooms. The 1st a brief history of the Gatehouse and listing of the owners. The second focused on the Rye House plot, a plot to kill Charles II and his brother.

A narrow, step, spiral staircase takes you to the first floor. One room that looks at the construction of the gatehouse. A map showing how it looked and fitted into the landscape. Finally on the walls examples of the plaster that used to cover the walls.

Back to the staircase and up to the top of the Gatehouse Tower for good views of the surroundings.

Not the longest day out. Maybe 30 minutes. But worthwhile if in the area on an open day.

Pretty place but the ground was littered with dog poo! Usually these public parks are so clean, here we had to watch every step. Bit better near the picnic tables.

A little gem lost in the back streets of Hoddesdon, well worth a look. It was shut when I went but there's a little museum that may re-open someday.
Do find out about the Rye House plot to kill the King here on his way home from Newmarket - the punishments were spectacularly grisly.

A lovely place with a small building but really nice, there is a small pub across it and river canal next to, I can imagine how busy and lovely it will be if not due to lockdown. But yes not much other things to do here😅😂
