I've probably felt suicidal for somewhere between 20 to 25 of the last 30 years, and for the majority of that time I suffered in silence. Around six years ago, I finally sought help, and all I can say is I really wish I'd never bothered.
Earlier this year, I made my first suicide attempt. I have since sought help from the Home Treatment Team. I was particularly low as I was told that I could not see my former psychiatrist. He is based out of the area, and apparently considers me too much of a suicide risk. I Rang "helpline" number, and was told that I didn't meet the criteria for help. The woman wouldn't tell me what the "criteria" were. I said, "I'm suicidal", and she hung up on me.
I repeatedly rang back, hoping to have a WTF-themed discussion with her. I was absolutely incredulous that she thought that her actions were appropriate. Instead, the phone was answered by a different member of staff. I'm glad I recorded the conversation, as he answered the phone impersonating his female colleague. He then told me he'd called the police to complain about me blocking their line (I'm supposed to know that they only have one incoming line?), and that I should be expecting a knock on my door. This was a point that he hammered home, trying to scare me.
1) On the notes at their end, it says that he called the police, who informed him they couldn't do anything, and suggested he speak to BT. (I should also note that he claimed I was blocking their line. He doesn't seem to understand that picking up the phone and dealing with the person on the end of it might stop it from ringing again?!)
2) He deliberately lied to a distressed, suicidal patient. Who the Hell behaves like that? (That's kind of rhetorical... NHS mental healthcare workers, apparently).
3) What kind of mental health-trained* workers hang up on someone who tells them they are feeling suicidal?
(*I assume they are trained?)
4) If you can't deal with people who are distressed and difficult - do everyone a favour and get a different job. I have had jobs dealing with people who a difficult, including people who are drunk and occasionally violent. I have _never_ behaved in such an unprofessional manner as the staff at the Home Treatment Team behaved towards me.
If you're in crisis, do not bother with this place. Or mental health services in general. Just accept there is no available help and plan accordingly.
I've also been a patient here as the result of engaging with Somerset "Talking Therapies". That experience wasn't much better.
Avoid.
Well I continued to try to explain to her very distressed by this point that holly court have always helped me with my medication issues reguardless of being under them or not. She was just point blank arguing with me and spoke to me like utter s**t. Then hung up on me. So I called back in to be told by another receptionist that Emma had said I had been difficult and was obnoxious. Well I do apologise, I was dealing with a argumentative receptionist and incompetent doctors resulting in my medication being stopped for 4 weeks. So I requested to put in a formal complaint which wasn’t addressed. Called in again today and awaiting the manager to call me back. For a mental health service this is utterly appalling. I was in sever distress with no medication and that was the treatment I received.
