Great B&B in a super location at the heart of Hay on. It is a very old building with loads of character.
Rooms are clean and functional.
The breakfast is amazing with plenty of choice and the full English is a real great start to a day.
Diane the host is really nice and helpful.
on site parking is a real bonus.

2 stars because town was nice. But not able to sleep because town clock chimes (ding dong twice) loud every 15mins and then chimes on the hour whatever time it is. Breakfast was superb, staff friendly. Would recommend if somehow you could block out the clock.

Met up with 2 former school friends and stayed 2 nights. Fabulous location right in the heart of beautiful Hay, great service, lovely comfy beds and quiet nights sleep, fantastic breakfast. Very clean, well equipped and efficiently run. Owner manager very friendly and helpful in booking taxi for us, etc.

Wasn't the friendliest reception, the room was ok but lacked certain facilities, like a fridge. The television was minute too. The doors also slammed really loud no matter what and the walls were pretty thin, you could hear the neighbours conversation and could tell what they were watching on television. The pool was good and the breakfast was good quality, but other than those things the experience was just ok. A member of staff was also a little snooty with us and tried to undermine my partner's comment about the beds personally not being soft enough for us, as if it was a challenge when really we were just answering her 'did you enjoy your stay' with honesty. It does the job but it's not phenomenal by any standards.

Without closer inspection 7 stars is a lovely old timey building with a pool and sauna, set right in the centre of Hay-on-wye.

But when we went, the sauna was broken, the pool was often busy at all times of the day. The floors near the bedrooms were creaky and you couldn't close the doors without slamming them every time. The official staff didn't greet us when we arrived as the manager had gone out so we were shown to our room by... I don't even know who it was. I heard the lady speaking to the manager outside, saying "I've showed them to their room and said you'd go up when your back" but the manager never did come up.

The beds were stiff, as they usually are in hotels, so we didn't have a good night's sleep, however, breakfast was lovely. Hands down the best egg on toast I've had.

When we paid, the manager asked if everything was okay with our stay and as it wasn't cheap, I had to say something. I chose only to say, "we didn't sleep well because of the stiff beds but the breakfast made up for it, it was lovely" but the manager curtly said "well we can't please everyone, most people like hard beds."

To top it all off, she asked if me and my partner were teachers, which is a random assumption to make. And wrong too. We just like books. Then asked where we were going next and I said "we're going to try Ross-on-wye". She smiled and said "oh it's positively down-market there."

This snooty attitude seemed to be a common trait in hay-on-wye which is why we won't be hitting the hay there again. But if you're wondering ross-on-wye was a very nice little town with lots of great charity book shops and friendly shop-owners. So nay to hay, but I'd recommend Ross, we'll definitely visit there again.

Initially we were disappointed with our room, but the breakfasts were excellent and specifically must mention Claire, the staff member who consistently went above and beyond our expectations. She made our stay!

Simply timeless

Just returned from another wonderful stay at this at the Seven Stars, if I could give a review of 7 stars I would.

I have stayed several times before on business and pleasure. In these days of sterile hotels and poor customer service, this place is an absolute gem that should be treasured.

The rooms are comfortable as are the beds, the breakfast is wonderful, even a vegetarian option. Service at breakfast is quick and efficient even when the hotel has many guests in residence. The pool makes the place, it feels very exclusive when you have it to yourself and my favourite part of a stay.

The owner not only remembers returning guests, but takes the time to make guests feel at home with a chat and a smile. That rare old fashioned commodity, customer service.

In these financially troubled times, places like this do disappear, a time and a place can never be replaced once it's gone. We have experienced this before, returning years later to a favourite hotel to find the previous owners gone and the hotel redeveloped. A very special place, run by people who cared about quality and service gone forever. I hope this never happens to the Seven Stars.

If you are still reading this review and debating staying, just book you won't regret it. For those who are looking for a premier Inn then, book one leave this place to guests who appreciate what a special place this hotel and the owner are.

Visited here with hubby in December 2022. Perfect all round! Lovely owner & really well-behaved dog. Really nice breakfast included. Very cosy & nicely heated bedroom. Nice warm shower. Everything working as it should. I'd most definitely come back here. Beautiful place! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 💖
