Thompson St Albans

Beautiful ambience. Polite, attentive service, good food and good vegetarian choice - but extremely slow coming out of the kitchen with atleast half hour between courses.
However not at all value for money even for a high end restaurant and we thought we were having the mid-week menu but were given another (more expensive menu) and only realised at the end. Parking difficult. Would not go back.

It is one of our favorite local restaurant. Excellent food and service. We went this time to celebrate birthday and ordered 9 courses menu, to be honest, it was too much and too long service, too much mousses served in most of the courses (that's why only 4 stars this time). The chef's choice had truffles (...and mousse) which was very tasty (and adds £30 more per person, kind of expensive...). As conclusion, 7 courses should be more than enough.

My partner booked lunch at this restaurant for my birthday and it was, overall, a good experience. We were the only diners indoors for the first couple of hours - the whole experience takes a long time especially if you have a drink in the outdoor space before eating: we were there for 3 and a half hours. Our waiter was very polite and explained each dish well. We enjoyed the relaxed ambience. The food was good and we enjoyed the different textures and flavours combined. On the down side, the prices are too high and difficult to justify. For some people, the time between courses may be a bit too long. The cheese board was rather lacking. Nevertheless, it was a good experience and we would recommend it. Seven course taster lunch should do the trick but we did need to have the cheese board otherwise we may have felt a bit hungry soon after!

We had the full 9 course tasting menu with the wine pairing and I can say with confidence that it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. Each course was unique and expertly executed. The beef dish in particular had me audibly gasping in delight with how good it was. The service was exceptional with the staff being attentive and very knowledgeable about the food and drink they were serving. We had high expectations going in and a lot of times when that happens and the experience doesn’t match those expectations you can go home feeling disappointed, but I am more than happy to report that Thompsons exceed our expectations and we left feeling incredibly satisfied. It goes without saying that this is for special occasions but if you’re looking for something befitting of a special occasion then Thompsons is something extra special.

Another absolutely fantastic night at our favourite restaurant. The food and staff / service were amazing as always! The tasting menu and wine pairings were really interesting and imaginative and on a par with any top London restaurant. We are so lucky to have such a great place on our doorstep in St Albans. Can’t wait to go back again for another fab signature cocktail! Well worth a visit either during the week or at the weekend!

Great food in cosy and intimate surroundings. It's a set dinner menu of around 8 courses, with or without paired wines. Top quality ingredients, well prepared. Our servers were very friendly and gave some details of the wine pairings.

Amazing dinning experience, had a great birthday celebration there. I liked the fact the whole table didn't have to choose exactly the same tasting menu. We were also able to have our own cake!
Highly recommend as a place for celebratory meals!
