I decided to make a trip to Winchester on the 4th September 2018. Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated about 61 miles south west of London and around 13 from Southampton which is its closest city. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. The city is, home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still using its original buildings. There is so much to see here in this fine city and spending a day here you would find it difficult to cover all the famous sites. I then walked up to the Winchester’s Military Quarter which is situated in the impressive preserved Victorian barracks next to the Great Hall. There are six museums to explore, each one with stunning collections of medals, beautiful paintings, uniforms, fascinating archive film and personal souvenirs. Together they tell the story of British soldiers in peace and in war, at home and abroad, in the last 300 years. There is something to interest all ages, and all members of the family: you can hear the stories of the Battle of Waterloo and of the Charge of the Light Brigade, experience the culture of Nepal, and discover when women first joined the Army. You can also find out how the Hampshire Tigers got their name, and what it takes to be a modern Rifleman.
Winchester’s Military Museums is a grouping of six military museums situated within yards of each other on an historic site close to the city centre of Winchester and adjacent to the Great Hall. The six museums are:
Horse Power, the Regimental Museum of The King’s Royal Hussars
The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum
The Royal Green Jackets Museum
The Rifles Museum
The Gurkha Museum
The Guardroom Museum, the Museum of the Adjutant-General’s Corps
Each museum is separately run and well worth a visit in its own right. A visit to Winchester’s Military Museums, however, provides an opportunity to visit all of them and enjoy an interesting day out.
Additionally, there is a Visitor’s Centre with refreshments available at the on-site cafe Copper Joe’s.

History of our riflemen, very comprehensive, detailing the history of all the campaigns we have been involved since the American war of Independence 1775/6
A prize exhibit is the Waterloo diorama, with commentary every few minutes.
I was somewhat stunned by the number of countries around the world that we have had a military presence in, mainly empire building in the early days, I googled after ,only 22 countries we have not fought against, stunning .
Of course it is politicians, not soldiers that dictate policy, soldiers just do as they are told
Many many brave men remembered here .

The Rifles museum is absolutely bloody awesome.
So much history and so well presented. Takes you through the whole RGJ history and includes bits of the 5 pillars of the Regiment well done to all involved.
Just walking through the gate at Peninsula Barracks brought a straightened back to this 65 year old straight away.

Loved this museum. If you have an interest in the regiment, the Waterloo period or of course the Sharpe novels then this museum is fantastic. From the Napoleonic to the modern period there is much to see here with an outstanding interactive model of Waterloo

A most informative museum into the Rifles regiment and the British army. The audio and visual display on the Battle of Waterloo, was very well done.

Fantastic place, been many times now and always see something that I've missed or not noticed before. Housed in the old Barracks sets that immediate feel before you first go in.
Small entry fee to pay but well worth it.
