Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

Came for the Grayson Perry exhibition which was excellent. We had never been to the museum before and had a lovely time wandering around looking at all the exhibits. There is a wide range of different art styles and exhibits on display with lots of interesting local history too! Very extensive collection of taxidermy animals. We bought tickets in advance online and did not have to wait long to get in.

Went to see Grayson Perry’s Art Club exhibition, had a great Wednesday afternoon. Staff at the front door were super helpful and chatty, and I liked how you booked time slots to spread visitors out - it’s for Covid but actually it just makes the visitor experience better because it’s not as crowded. I’ve seen queues outside on weekends but on a weekday we went straight in. You can book a free time slot or pay a donation online, it’s amazing we have access to brilliant culture from £0 upwards. The exhibition was spread out around the museum, with most of it on the ground floor and some other pockets elsewhere on the upper floor. I didn’t mind this as I don’t have mobility issues, but I did hear other people having some concerns about steps. There were some fab pieces that made me think, and reflected feelings that I’d had about lockdown, and I was blown away by the artistic talent that the British public has. The museum cafe is fine, good range of cakes and coffee, I didn’t look at meals or savouries this time. While we didn’t visit it this time, there’s a kids’ area that my 3 year old daughter loves, alongside Dino skeletons upstairs, so she enjoys a trip to the museum as well. Remember your pound coin for the locker if you have wet coats or big bags, the locker eats the coin and doesn’t return it, so trolley tokens are no good and who carries coins nowadays?? Overall a lovely trip, we been lots of times before and will return many more times. Good work Bristol Museum.

Art & Historical museum that is well diverse. It's been well maintained with a lot of descriptions to keep you entertained. Would recommend to those who enjoy reading and have the time to appreciate the exhibits. Overall, 8/10.

Excellent and free city museum. The building itself is absolutely beautiful. A prime example of Victorian era architecture.

Set over several floors this has something for everyone. The fine arts collection is impressive with some notable artists on display which gives a sense of grandeur. The Japanese porcelain collection is worth a look too.

If you like history the Egyptian exhibition is excellent, informative and interesting. Quite impressive for a smaller UK city. There are also dinosaur fossils on display as well as a prehistoric section.

The standout has to the replica airplane hanging from the ceiling. Quite a sight!

A great way to spend an hour or two

We were a little fatigued by the time we got to the museum so didn’t get the chance to have a proper look around. Some lovely paintings from well known artists such as Pissarro and Constable. My favourite was “Will He Come Back?” by Robert Morley - so well depicted. Definitely worth a visit.

Even though we did not book online for the free entry, it was a breeze to enter the museum. On 4 Jan 2021, 2:45 pm, a young lady service counter staff was very good n patient to explain the exhibits layout and orientate visitors w reference to map on the brochure. Great job! 👍 Enjoy the museum visit thoroughly as the explanation for the exhibits are very clear and easy to understand without too many scientific jargons. If only there were more time to spend at the museum. Great for family with kids as children are also the target audience.

A really good morning out. Took my 9-year-old into Bristol (park at West Gate Street) to check it out and he loved the Egyptian, dinosaur and animal exhibits and took interest in the others and at gallery.

It is a grandiose building, with since impressive architecture and history, and certainly bigger than you might think from the outside. When you get to the upper levels there are several rooms that aren't obvious from the ground floor.

The café is reasonably priced and of course the museum is free (donations welcomed).

If I were to offer one peace of constructive feedback it'd be to run something like a quiz/treasure hunt to keep the kids engaged (it's possible this exists and we missed it though).

I’ve been here twice now and I’ve loved the museum and gallery both times. I think the gallery interests me a lot more than the museum area, but if I had children I think they’d find many of the museum exhibitions very exciting. There are a variety of paintings and in different styles, some of the rooms are filled with portraits and the feeling that they are all looking at you (especially when you are alone) is very intense. Their gift shop has postcards and prints of many of the more significant paintings in the gallery, such as La Belle Dame Sans Merci which was there in all its romantic grandeur. It’s worth going here for a date or simply with your friends.
