In 1971 Paul Williams had been tasked with landscaping Goodland Gardens by Taunton Borough Council. Part of these works involved removing a wall which he noticed was partially supporting a tree, also scheduled for removal.
In his own words, "I thought it a shame to lose a perfectly good tree, and suggested that if a section of the brick wall was left in place, the tree could remain and this was agreed. In the intervening years the tree has continued to develop and the remains of the wall gradually disappeared."
