This ruined Bronze Age funerary mound is a fascinating place forever interlinked with Welsh folklore, as it is the reputed burial site of the mythical Branwen, Sister of Bendigaidfran The Giant King of Britain. She was a great beauty and the fairest of all maidens and was married off by her Brother to Matholwch King Of All Ireland. Things went downhill rapidly though with great ill feeling and tragedy caused by the union which resulted in poor Branwen suffering greatly and ultimately dying of a broken heart (hence a link to the broken centre stone). Several urns and a cremation were discovered at this site when it was excavated in the 1960's. An earlier dig in 1813 revealed a smaller scale of like funerary items. The overall mound itself is some 30 metres across and 1 metre high and discovered to be very complex indeed within upon excavation.
It must be noted however that the funerary mound predates the time of Branwen by several thousand years to keep an archaeological perspective. The lore is romantic and tragic and fascinating though. The country road to the field containing the mound is primarily of flat concrete construction save for a rough uneven stony section before the field which becomes concrete again thereafter. I parked at the top of the road in a recess in front of the small electricity power station and walked the 0.75 miles or so to the field as I did not want to leave my car as an obstruction when viewing the site. Be aware that in Winter, fields can get muddy as can the walk to the field overall. I really recommend reading up on this fascinating place before visiting to get the most out of it.
