Lovely dog walk in the nature, you can climb up to the tower that apparently was built by the family that built montacute house to show their power.
The hill was an ancient medieval fort according to a volunteer that was around today.

It's a bit of a climbe and some areas can be muddy but there are great views, even without climbing up the tower.

Lovely old tower, great view, good exercise getting up there! Shame some people decided to leave a load of rubbish up there but you get idiots everywhere.

Visited on a wet day in February and the hill is very slippery on some paths. The path from the priory was dodgy and don't try and go up the first path you come to as it was a steep muddy slippery gully when I tried it. Best to walk around the base fence to the gate at the western edge and go up the well made hard path. When you get to the halfway ring, go left not right so you avoid the top of the gully. This takes you round to the final slope path up to the top and the tower. You can go up the tower but the views were great, even on a drizzly day. Would be a spectacular panoramic view of Somerset on a sunny day. We'll worth the walk up from Montacute village but be careful and wear good walking shoes if wet.

Having been to the top of this tower, the views are indeed spectacular, and it is relatively spacious at the top - iron-barred windows allow you to see across the treetops to the horizon.
Great place to admire the view over Stoke-sub-Hamdon and the local manor.

Unfortunately, it's repeatedly being boarded up by some jobsworth prat who presumably has nothing better to do with their time.

Pleasant enough walk, we enjoyed it on a wet and windy day, and the dogs ran themselves ragged. The view from the top is extensive, but would have been better from the top of the closed tower, at its pinnacle. It's unclear whether this ever gets opened however. Beautiful properties at the bottom of the hill, as one enters Montacute village, ones where we could see ourselves cuddled up in front of an open log fire, and enjoying the view that is St Michael's Hill.

Cool place to take the family, short walk from a very pretty village that has a pub shops etc and parks for kids it's a real winner.
Steep walk but that's a good thing.
