As for the food it was delicious! We had never been here before but had recommendations from family members.
We had to start, the sourdough bread with two homemade butters, garlic and a mushroom butter, the trout, whipped cod roe and the mushroom croquettes.
The croquettes are really delicious, I think my wife could have eaten a couple of plates of them. I can’t say I was bowled over by the trout or the whipped cod roe. For the main we shared a ribeye (£75) for the sharing plate. The steak was so tender it melted in your mouth. Ice cream for one to finish. Two glasses of wine. Total bill £152. All in all a very nice experience.
The food was incredible, we both had lamb and shared the chips and cabbage. The lamb is possibly the best I've ever had and the price feels reflective of the quality, but again I wasn't expecting to be eating from the full menu. We skipped starters but we did have the set vanilla custard for pudding which was good, but there was a little too much going on in the raspberry topping.
The service was friendly and quick and they gave me a congratulations card for my graduation, which was kind. I am giving three stars because it was a much more expensive experience than I'd planned and it seems opportunistic to shelve the set menu during graduations. The food really was excellent and if you want to eat somewhere special in Cardiff then I would recommend Thomas's.
We go to many Michelin star restaurants regularly, mostly in London so we are fully aware of what to expect at high end places in terms of portion sizes.
Food:
The food was all tasty. We ordered most nibbles, starters and mains on the menu between all 5 of us. I wouldn’t say the food was incredible but it was nice and tasty. For the price, I was expect more from the creativity of the dishes.
We do expect small portions at places like this - but as a vegetarian myself, I left the restaurant still hungry as my aubergine dish was tiny (and I was charged similar to the lamb / beef dishes).
Service:
Again, the service was just average. The waiter took long to take our order and the food came out very slowly. We spent 3 hours here for just a table of 5 for three courses. Again, somewhere like this, you’d expect flawless service really.
All in all, it wasn’t a bad restaurant but I wouldn’t rush back, purely because I don’t think it is value for money. We’ve been to much nicer high end restaurants.
We were pleasantly surprised on arrival by a lovely card from the staff wishing us a happy anniversary and also a kind message at the end with our desert, very thoughtful indeed.
From the steak main to the bread for the table, it was all cooked to perfection, regardless of the portion size comments I was perfectly satisfied by the quantities. The staff were very lovely and extremely helpful, the location and restaurant itself was very cosy and very romantic.
Thanks again for a special night and a lovely experience. Diolch.
