A weekend to forget.

I am regretfully writing this review as I have only heard good things from The Red Lion, however I am so appalled at the service and food I feel I would not be able to sleep without sharing this information.

Upon entering The Red Lion the first thing I noticed was it had been refurbished to a good standard and I was excited for my meal. We were greeted by a polite young lady who I assumed to be the manager, she informed us that the table would not be ready for 20 minutes after our booking time. No problem.

After being seated we waited 40 minutes to be served our starters which were underwhelming in size but ok in taste.

Time goes by, more and more. Eventually we asked what how long the main meal would be, 'just out in a few minutes' was the answer. A hour and a half later the mains come out, high reviews for the fish a chips if there was a section for that, however the beef meals that cost over £15 could not be cut with the knives provided, or a chainsaw if I had one to hand.

Deserts came promptly after. Again the worst experience about the whole thing is we had no cutlery through the meal, we had to take them from other set tables as every time we asked, they would say it would be straight out, plates from the starters and main remained on the table the whole time clogging up the table, even after requesting staff to remove them. Again we were fobbed off. I can deal with a average meal, but I do not want to eat my cheesecake with one elbow in my pate starter and the other in my gravy plate.

Overall a really bad service, the meals would pass, however a budget Toby Carvery would have been on par and would advise for price and service.

SUNDAY LUNCH.For 5. Sorry first and last time. Although we booked on the Tuesday , no table had been reserved. Very off hand as though we were a nuisance. Took a long time to take drinks order and even longer to arrive, even then not correct . Then after trying to attract their attention for over 10mins , the order was finally taken . Not hospitable in any way. Not even busy, only with takeaways. Food was mediocre .Better less costly places within a few miles.

Went for Sunday lunch today and it was absolutely delicious. Fantastic service from the staff. I had gammon steak which was huge and so tasty and juicy. Home made chips were delicious. My dad had the lamb roast and he said it was lovely. My brother also had the gammon and he said it was the best meal out he had had in ages

We ate here today for the first time. The Sunday menu was varied and very reasonable. It was a celebration meal and we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is tasteful (not your typical pub meal). The food was delicious, great quality, served professionally. First class food and service. I highly recommend this place. We will definitely be back. Well done all.

We booked for 29 people to celebrate a 90th birthday tonight at the Red Lion. Organisation was excellent people were served altogether food was of an excellent standard.(we had not been for awhile as food not so good ,we were informed new chef and much better)
Could not fault it good portions of food, salads and chips with meals were amazing. Salads contained several items not just a piece of lettuce and tomato. Well done Phoebe and the team. We will be going back very soon.

Came here for the Halloween pub quiz (so we would be safe from sports questions) and had a really great time. The quiz and all the bonus game rounds were great fun and Steve, the owner, was an excellent host. We will definitely be back. Lovely atmosphere and friendly people
