One of the best hotels/inns I've ever stayed in. The old charm of the building was made better by the incredible kindness of the staff. The food was incredible - they really do deserve all the awards they get! You can just tell that everyone who works there is passionate about where they work and it's so great to see. Also, the beds were incredibly comfortable and it's just a short walk to almost every bookstore in Hay! I can't wait to stay again.

I phoned and booked a table for Sunday lunch after seeing all the great reviews. Unfortunately on arrival my reservation couldn't be found. They were very apologetic and managed to get us a table in the main bar restaurant. The food was brilliant as were the staff. It was a half way stop on our way to South Wales so will definitely revisit this place next time we go again.

Stopped there for my birthday lunch randomly with my wife. Staff were very attentive and not over the top . Good selection of wines and beers . And then there was the food, it was amazing, good selection and definitely not ur normal pub food, all cooked perfectly. Will be booking again, thanks to all the staff for making it such a good find .

Fantastic meal apparently the best my wife has tasted. Really friendly staff. Proper good old fashioned pub that we are planning to go back and stay now we have found out it is also a hotel. A great location in Hay-on-Wye to visit plenty of bookshops and the castle.

Discovered our trip to Wales that there are limited places open on a Tuesday evening.

Luckily The Old Black Lion was! About 30 minutes drive from our accommodation in Builth Wells. Had a lovely meal in the Lion's Den section of their establishment where you can bring your dog along to enjoy your meal. I had the cod and my husband had the mussels. Also had the baked white chocolate cheesecake with plum compote for dessert. The cod was cooked just right and the accompanying samphire, tomatoes and new potatoes were a great match. I absolutely loved the cheesecake! All up with drinks our meal was just under £60.

Would definitely recommend if you're staying or visiting the area.

The Old Black Lion is a traditional pub, we went for Sunday lunch and had a fantastic time. Food and service were great.
I went for the curried fish cake starter, lamb main and dark chocolate mousse dessert.

I would recommend booking as it is quite a popular place for Sunday lunch, tables of more than 4 people need to pay £10pp to reserve which is then deducted off your final bill.

Highly recommend the food and great service. Was an absolute pleasure visiting this restaurant, the food was amazing. Well thought of menu and prepared to a high standard. Service staff, Jodi and Jasmin were professional and friendly and made every effort to ensure we had an amazing fine dining experience. Must visit if you're in Hay.

We had a lovely Saturday Night dinner in with great locally produced drinks, lucky 7 and Dr Beakys gin all with a live jazz band playing!
The food was excellent - the lamb was perfect, very tasty and big portions. Friendly staff too.
