Sewing Shed Stroud

I attended the beginners sewing class at the Sewing Shed in Stroud and can say that I had thoroughly enjoyed this. Martha was a fab teacher and was so patient when my projects didn’t always go to plan. There was a variety of different projects that took place over the 10 sessions where we had learnt different skills. I would love to attend another course with Martha where I can improve my skills even more!

Martha's beginners course is absolutely brilliant. She takes you step by step through the basics - from things like threading your machine, through to things I thought would be tricky, like sewing zips. I really liked how open Martha is to questions. She's so knowledgeable, and is an effortlessly natural teacher. All of the people on the course we're very supportive of each other, and the projects were not skewed towards any gender. I wholeheartedly recommend the Sewing Shed Stroud - I can't wait for the next course!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the beginners sewing course with Martha. I often forgot the next step and Martha was always so patient and happy to explain again. The classes were really laid back and informal, a warm environment made up of lovely and supportive people all just hoping to learn a new creative skill. Will be booking onto another course!

The quality of the work my ten year old daughter brings home from her weekly sewing classes with Martha is really impressive. In the past couple of years she has worked on a wide range of self-chosen projects, including cushion covers, bags, and two dresses, and learned how to incorporate features such as zips, buttonholes, linings and applique. With warmth and good humour Martha pushes her to work accurately and to her best technical ability, but also nurtures an artistic approach, celebrating colour and pattern. My daughter has really thrived under Martha's wing; her knowledge of technique now surpasses mine, and she is always disappointed to find it's already time to go home at the end of a class!

I've just completed the Beginners course and have loved every minute of it! I have learnt how to use a sewing machine to the point that I have bought one and have the confidence to put it to work. We made a range of lovely items and 'samplers' for referring back to, all with the patient support and encouragement from Martha. The group was also a fantastic bunch of people, with much laughter, chocolate (thanks Steve!!) and mutual problem solving - a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience and I am very much looking forward to the follow-up course in the spring. I loved this course and have already signed up for a follow on course next year. It covered all the basics - choosing materials, measuring, pinning, cutting, pressing and, of course, using a sewing machine, including zips and button holes. The course is ideal for those who have never done any sewing and for those who know roughly what to do but have no idea of how to do it well. The classes are small and the teaching is thorough, delivered with humour, always supportive and is a lovely environment for learning a new skill.

Martha's sewing for beginners was a great introduction to the world of sewing. Martha was an amazing teacher where nothing was too much trouble and was always on hand to help. I now have the sewing bug and would love to enrol onto Sewing for Beginners Part 2

What a fabulous beginners course! I now have the confidence to practice and try out new skills on a new machine that had been sitting under its cover for a year. I’d hardly ever sewn before & Martha showed us the basics of machine sewing and guided us through several small projects and made it all very enjoyable. Beginners course part 2 already firmly booked and I can’t wait! Thank you Martha 🙏😁
