Reflecting on my personal yoga journey, I had been practising yoga for a couple of years before attending James yoga flow class. I keep returning two years later because each week he brings fresh life to familiar poses and connects the practice to the here and now.
I will never be the most flexible student, but I have certainly improved. The biggest change from attending the classes regularly is increased strength and a sense of freedom and physical ease in my body, both on the mat and off.
James offers a wide array of classes, at least one per day, every day of the week, catering to different levels of experience and intensity, from slower classes on Wednesdays and Sundays to the more sweat-inducing Core Yoga and Power Flow classes - there is literally something there for everyone. He also offers a variety of pricing options, meaning the classes are affordable even for people on lower incomes. All of his online classes are also recorded, meaning even if you can't make it live, you can always catch up in your own time. His in-person classes in St. Paul's are an absolute highlight, set in a beautiful venue, often featuring James playing piano or the violin for savasana.
James is an incredible teacher with a wealth of knowledge about anatomy, yoga history and philosphy, and psychology, which he often combines into stimulating themes and innovative flows for his classes. He typically offers many variations for yoga poses throughout his classes, helping you to improve your strength and flexibility in the long-term, even if (like me) you are not yet at the stage where you can easily jump into handstands or the splits! Equally, he also demonstrates very advanced versions of yoga poses for the more experienced yogis.
As a teacher, James is very patient, helpful, encouraging and supportive. He is regularly organising charity webinars to support mental health charities and even provides a free pass for virtual classes should you ever find yourself struggling to afford yoga classes. You won't find a more kind-hearted, talented and knowledgable yoga teacher - I would encourage anyone to try his classes.
James is the best yoga teacher I’ve ever had (and I’ve lived in 3 different countries). Whether beginner or advanced Yogi - you will be in good hands. James’ knowledge of anatomy but also philosophy of yoga is stunning. He offers a variety of online and face-to-face classes as well as workshops at atmospheric locations that are themed with relatable topics, the sequences are thoroughly thought through and at the same time promise creativity. Live violin or piano play during Savasana included! James is a very welcoming, kind, and big-hearted person, who gives a lot (for example, offering people who are not able to pay to participate in his classes).
I am deeply grateful to him showing me the ropes to developing my own individual yoga skills (and limits to work with). I’ve become physically and mentally stronger throughout the practice with James and that is exactly what I hoped would happen when practising yoga more frequently and intensely, and having found a style of yoga that suits me. Experiencing James’ approach, I even became so inspired with Yoga that I took up teacher training myself.
Thank you so much, James! Such a great project!
He’s exceptional and exceptionally idiosyncratic in his teaching, often mixing extremes that hardly ever go together but are blended most organically in him. James’s classes are some of the hardest I’ve done, yet also some of the most playful, where being a fool and not accomplishing the supposedly perfect version of a posture is not only allowed but even invited. They are also super varied, creative and non-conventional. I can’t remember even two classes that have felt like one another or like a “normal” yoga class! I also can’t remember a class when I haven’t burst out laughing (luckily muted on Zoom) at one of James’s off-the-cuff remarks.
Most preciously for me, James is the yoga teacher who surfaces your negative inner conversation more consistently and more honestly than anyone else (often through admitting to his own). I will full-heartedly credit him for being the person other than me because of whom an inner switch flicked: my body feels like a welcoming home and my yoga practice feels joyous like never before, even if I am one of the most inflexible lot who will remain so forever.
Finally (but only because long reviews tend to lose the reader, otherwise I can write pages), he challenges the conventional wisdom around many yoga teachings and also seeks to tie them to modern psychology, anatomy and broader research. That’s quite refreshing for those of us who think hard and are not easily persuaded, no matter how credible and ancient the source.
I can’t recommend James’s classes enough and will never be able to thank him enough. But if you decide to try, prepare to sweat, fall off and wonder “how’s that even possible?!”!
