A beautiful historic building as a pub. The food is fairly standard pub grub (good for everyone and well priced). Its dog friendly too - inside - as long as they are well behaved and on a lead.
The bar staff told us this building was derelict until 2006, when it underwent a 2 year, £4.5m renovation, which is still incomplete (but you wouldn't know it!). There are lots of small rooms furnished like a posh hotel, so even in busy times you won't feel like its busy.

Brilliant pub. Food is of excellent quality. Service is impeccable. Prices are really good, especially due to the eat out to help out scheme. Really impressed by the entire experience. The inside is beautiful. Big garden out back. Recommend for everyone. Will be returning 👍

Wonderful cosy pub with great staff, genteel atmosphere and the best bangers, mash and onion gravy for a long time. Parts of the bar are designated no mobiles/tablets/laptops encouraging patrons to get back into conversation mode. That said, it's a great place to slump back in the chair and devour a few chapters of your favourite novel on your Kindle over a slow beer.

The beer is the best of a bygone age. I had the double stout. I have not tasted better.

The food was good pub food. There could have been more chips, but my chicken was tasty.

What made it for me was the place.

Great quiet meeting place and nice beer garden.

Excellent pub with some very reasonable prices. Beers are kept in good condition and served by friendly staff. The historic building creates a fantastic ambience while having a pint, especially when the fires are lit.
Superb beer garden out the back too

It is 3 degrees outside. The entrance door is wide open. No fireplace is lit. We asked three times for heat. No heat. We sat there for 2 hours in cold without any heat and our coats on. We would have left but we had ordered mac &cheeese which took them 1h to prepare. It is a historic pub and has lovely interior but it is very poorly managed. They have no quality of service. It is sad that I travelled to gloucester and wasted my Sunday afternoon there.

I don't even know where to start. I am so so disappointed - used to love coming here, so when my family were over from abroad for a day to meet my baby, we decided to have lunch here. Literally the worst experience I have had anywhere. The one waitress on shift (tried very hard to keep up!) was new and seemed to be on the phone with the manager every 5min, food took hours to come out, then 3 peoples orders were missing. We waited over two hours for two burgers and chicken to then be told there was no chicken and the burgers were not ordered. One burger then arrived cold, which we sent back. Waited another half hour but nothing else came so ended up going to subway, so hungry and irritated! Asked for a refund to be told the only refund they could do was for the one burger sent back. The vegan burger gave my sister food poisoning literally the day before having to travel back and it smelled like real meat was in it or cooked in the same pan. Over £70 wasted on the worst experience ever for what should have been a very special day for me and my family, who I rarely get to see. Everyone was irritated and we had no time to do anything else that day which I had planned, to show them around. Am so sad about this. This was Wednesday the 28th December 2022.
