I ordered the broad bean bacon bruschetta starter and that tasted as disappointing as it looked - badly matched ingredients thrown together and as expected it was most unappetising. The broad beans skin were pruned, the tomato slice looked and tasted like boiled tomato, and the bruschetta was like soaked bread. Hopefully the main will be better......
oil swilling in my mouth on my first bite of the Yorkshire pud was novel, as never experienced oil filled Yorkshire pud before. OK so what about the chicken..... it was so dry and heavy as a brick that it gave me an arm workout cutting into it. The taste sadly didn't make up for the texture and the white sauce it was sitting in was...ermmm...well awful, unpalatable (what on earth was that sauce?!) and needless to say the food was not eaten. My daughter had the seafood pie and that was swimming in liquid. In fact, the whole pub smelt very strongly of fish (perhaps the air extractor fan was faulty?) which is not welcomed by most people.
To finish our meal we shared our lemon cheesecake and fresh fruit pavlova which was OK.
The waitress and landlady were lovely and helpful.
The ladies room seriously needs some renovating to rid of the damp, flaking paint, broken flush, lack of heating as it was freezing in there and the warm water taps poured out freezing cold water.
A dated pub that needs some money spent on it, and not sure what the food during the rest of the week is like, but judging by today's experience, a new chef who can cook and plan meals is seriously required.
I am disappointed and feel sorry for my daughter for wasting her hard earned £70 to treat me on mother's day 2022.
And John (the defender of poor reviews?), before you accuse me too of an inaccurate review, you seriously need to take feedback on board instead of calling reviewers liars, bears in clothes etc. Fact is your food today was awful, not worth the money, ruined a mother's day treat and the place reeked of fish.
Portion sizes are huge and well worth the money!! Great quality food would go back just for the cheesecake! Well needed after a long day of walking in the peak district.
Considering there is only two of them working there mon-sat they are doing a brilliant job! Call in advance to book!
Where to start?…
•Walking in we were greeted by a very friendly young lady, who was attentive, friendly, courteous and just so good at her job!
•The decor was beautiful and the Christmas decorations were perfect 🤩
•A cosy wood burning stove added to the ambiance 🔥
•The food was absolutely perfect, there were 5 of us ordering from the extensive Christmas menu, belly pork, Katsu curry, fish and chips, plus starters and desserts! All tasty and cooked perfectly! •We were able to order extra drinks from our table without being made to feel it was too much trouble for the bar lady!
•We had one adult and 2 young children tag along with us, just for a drink and a bag of crisp! They were all happily accommodated, even though they were not booked in!
We will definitely be back, many times in the future!
Thank you to all at The Fox and Hounds for restoring our faith in village pubs!
