1.They avoid providing specific quotes for work. I've asked them to do this with servicing and other jobs, yet the cost has consistently been more than they've estimated, with the excuse of "well you don't know how much it's going to be until we look at the car". Really? Well how come other garages manage to do it then?
2. Although the main guy Tony knows what he's talking about and seems honest, the younger mechanic is incompetent, and the receptionist is rude and unprofessional.
3. Their communication is patchy and they carry out works without advising you properly first what will need to be done ... they just go ahead and do it.
4. I took my car in for a routine interim service reporting that some dash lights had come on, that there was a rattle coming from under the car, and that the cruise control wasn't working, please would they diagnose.Took the car in first thing. I received no call about it by mid afternoon so called at 4pm to check what was going on. They confirmed that although originally they thought the rattle had been from some loose trim around the wheel arch, they now diagnosed it as a faulty drive shaft. Because this had been spotted at the end of the day I had to book it in for a week's time. I asked how much it would cost ... "should be 60 to 80 quid". So I did. The dash lights had been correctly and successfully diagnosed as shorted brake lights, and this had been resolved at a reasonable, though again unquoted cost... they had just gone ahead and done it. I asked about the cruise control they blethered and said they hadn't had time to do it. No apology or offer to look at this later. Basically, they had forgotten it. Booked the car in for the following Wednesday to get the drive shaft replaced. They had also neglected to stamp and fill in the service book, and forgotten to turn off the service warning light.
Was driving away and went to close the drivers window (automatic). It wouldn't close properly ... when it got to the top it went out of alignment so there was a gap on one side. The window had worked perfectly before I took it in. I called them first thing the next morning to report this and they said they would look at it when I took it in for the drive shaft.
The following Wednesday I took the car in and reminded them what needed doing. I received no call to report that the car was ready by 4.30pm so I called them and they said it was ready, in a way that strongly suggested that they'd forgotten about it. I picked up the car and they charged me £220 for the drive shaft (the original "quote" had been 60 to 80 pounds). They told me that the window regulator was broken and would need replacing.
When I was driving away the car made an appalling noise and vibration when accelerating. I immediately took the car back and explained this. The young mechanic was in charge and took the car out with me for a test drive. The same thing happened. I asked him if he could feel the vibration (it was extremely obvious and easy to feel, even for me as passenger). He said "well, I've heard worse." We got back to the garage and I said I would leave the car with them to resolve. There was no apology nor acknowledgement that they had done anything wrong. The main guy, Tony, and the receptionist were away that day but would be back in the next day.
I called them in the morning at around 9.30am (no call from them) They said that they were all discussing the job and that they thought they had fitted the wrong part ... that a further replacement was in hand and that they would call when it was done. They called mid afternoon to confirm it was done at which point I also said that they had broken the drivers window and what were they willing to do about it. The receptionist refused to take any responsibility, then when I pressed her on it, she hung up on me.
Believe it or not, there is still a small rattle under the car. I won't be returning to them to have it fixed.
I’ve used this garage a few times now. Honest/friendly people that get the job done when they say they will and always at the quoted price.
Highly recommended.
