Highly recommended to see the history of railways and steam engine. Enjoy the ride on heritage railway line with a visit to Railway museum. There are plenty of things for kids to learn and experience about the history of railways and its evolution over time. Onsite cafe is also very good, served local made food.

We bring the kids here every year. It's a must see on the holiday. You do approx 1 mile down the track, the kids help to change the points and then a short train ride to the museum. After a visit to the museum it's a short ride back to the station. It takes approximately 1 hour in total, but your ticket is valid for as many journeys as you want to do during the day. It keeps the kids more interested than a long train journey.

Stopped off with my son for a quick bacon sandwich after visiting the railway museum and having a short trip on the train. I have hesitated to post a negative review as this is a Heritage Railway run by volunteers, but in the end decided a review might help them raise their game a bit.

I should have 'smelt a rat' when the lady serving told the man lolling on the seat behind us that we wanted bacon sandwiches. I have to say he looked scruffy and not at all chef like and I did feel like cancelling at that point.

Sadly, the bacon was barely cooked and very greasy. Had I been given a knife I would have cut off the 'stringy' rind but had to resort to Mk1 fingers in its absence. To be fair, I could have asked for the bacon to be cooked some more; and also for a knife, but didn't really want to go back inside as the customer service was at best 'odd'. It just all felt a bit amateurish.

In fairness, this is an organisation run by volunteers and the guard on the train and the man in the shop were really friendly, knew their stuff and were more than welcoming. We did enjoy our visit to the railway itself and would go again, just avoiding bacon butties next time...

Amazing cafe. If you are ever in Porthmadog this is the place to go for lunch. My wife and I had a ham sandwich and cheese sandwich. Great portions with the ham full of flavour and the chutney that came with the cheese sandwich was delicious. We then had scones which were the best I have ever tasted (and I've had a lot in my time). All the food was freshly home made. Fully recommended 5 stars ✨

We enjoyed a delicious tuna sandwich served with tasty side salad and ready salted crisps at Russell Cafe today. The service was friendly and efficient. Tea was plentiful in the pot. We also savoured a cake. Highly recommended.

We really enjoyed our visit to the WHHR . Nice little cafe with probably the biggest collection of railway books in the world in its shop , short train ride which stops about 3/4 mile for a nice heritage museum which was very interesting , alot of facts about the surrounding areas history with the slate quarries and railways . The carriages have been restored to a very high standard . tickets are cheap so if your in the area I highly recommend

Russell Cafe, at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog, serves really good quality meals at very reasonable prices.
We had our breakfast there and it was really well cooked and very tasty. You definitely won't come away feeling hungry.
The cafe is very clean and the staff very friendly. Will certainly be going back next we holiday in the area 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
