This garage gives the impression of being a well-established, family run business, which probably has many loyal customers. But I hadn’t used it before, and after this experience, I won’t be using it again. The hard facts are these: my car’s headlights weren’t working and it probably needed a service. It took a week for the headlights to be fixed. How long they will last, after a switch was replaced with a used one acquired from the garage owner’s mate, I don’t know. For an unnecessary amount of extra detail, read on.

I accidentally booked a service into this garage, thinking it was Express Vehicle Services next door, who I received decent service from around 9 months earlier. I only realised my mistake when I arrived but decided to go through with it. The main reason for the service was an intermittent fault with the headlights, which I made a point of telling the lady at the desk about, and she made a note to go with my key (see image). After a few hours they called with an update to say a few things needed doing, new spark plugs, suspension coil (£320 total), but the headlights seemed fine. When I collected it, the first thing I checked were the headlights and they still didn’t work. I went back inside, waiting a while at the desk as a customer on the phone asked about work he had done not long before. He thought he’d had new brake pads fitted but now he was looking at it, he could see new brake pads hadn’t been fitted. Several men and mechanics crowded around the phone to address this and there was talk of ‘brake judder’. The cheery boss man repeated these words, like they explained everything. When I went back to the desk to complain about the lights, he was trying to ask a new woman at the desk, his daughter, to try and get some free football tickets. I re-explained my issue and he expressed surprise, said they had been working earlier, and invited me to bring the car back into the warehouse. Back inside I turned the lights on, explaining first that there were no dashboard lights, then there were no headlights. A row of mechanics also looked at the car. I asked them if they could see the headlights working. They said nothing. I re-explained that it was an intermittent problem, and the boss man showed some recognition, as if that explained everything and absolved him of any blame. He didn’t apologise in any memorable way and kept repeating the words ‘intermittent problem’ as if they explained everything. He said he’d try to get a used switch replacement, because it would be cheaper than getting one from Renault, and called his mate at another garage. It was 3.30pm before a bank holiday weekend and his mate was closing up, heading to west Wales for the weekend. If I could come back next Wednesday? It’d be another 30 or 40 quid. I expressed disappointment and he shrugged it off, never a ‘sorry’, never a dent in his cheery exterior. Nothing would dampen his spirits on this sunny bank holiday weekend ahead of an evening trip to watch Barry Town play football.

On Tuesday I called for an update and it seemed not unlike it had been forgotten. I was told someone would call me when they had the part in. Mid-morning Wednesday I called again. I wanted to plan my day and the latest I could collect the car that day was 2.30pm. The lady at the desk said she’d call me back. Half an hour passed and around 11am I called again. A young lad answered, perhaps a trainee mechanic giving cover to the office. I explained the situation once again, losing the will to live, and said I would come down on Friday instead, which I did. Friday lunchtime I received a call from the lady, who said it was fixed and they’d just charge for labour, not for the part they’d probably got free. I think she expected me to show thanks. It would come to another £60 including VAT. Not the 30 or 40 I'd been told previously. I returned, paid, and walked away from the garage, never to return.

Been using Mark as my main garage for many years now and never had a serious problem. Reasonable prices and work carried out to a high standard. It's the busiest garage in Barry for a reason!

They have now added tyre services and I used them for the first time this month to replace all four of my tyres. Done quickly, with good attention to detail and price was much cheaper than dedicated tyre shops. Highly recommended.

I booked my car into RIM motors, when I dropped it off the receptionist said she would have an update by the end of the day after a diagnostic.

An hour later I receive a call and the obnoxious receptionist says “we don’t have the tools to fix it; well I don’t know what you want me to do about it!”, I thought it might of been obvious I wanted my car to be fixed?? then she says I need to collect my car immediately. Extremely rude and unhelpful receptionist.

It went to another garage and the repair has been completed with no hassle

Avoid this garage, I would not recommend.
