Avis Car Hire - London Gatwick Airport

Location surcharge is charged after the car is returned - a whopping 23% of the total cost. Why it is not included in the base price, and not proactively discussed by the agent when handing over the keys - nobody from Avis is able to answer this.

I do agree that it was mentioned in the contract on the handover of the keys, however, I thought it was the surcharge in case the car is returned to a different location. The agent did not clarify this.

It's a shame how deceitful the practice is.

On the positive, the car we got was great and worked well through our trip. No complaints there.

We had a fabulous experience at Avis Gatwick airport. Doug was more than helpful.. we couldn't be happier with the service Doug provided. He went out of his way to give us the best deal and was super friendly

Beware that if you have dirt at your feet they will charge you 100 pounds. At check out the worker told us we were done and dusted and then slapped us with 100 pound fine for being excessively dirty. There was a slight bit of dirt and one water bottle. If warned we could have spent literally 5 minutes to avoid this fine. Management is upholding even after complaining that we were told we were good. We are contesting through our credit card as it is ridiculous to be charged when we told we were good and less 5 minutes of our labor could have made it acceptable to them. He should have said hey this is too dirty I’m going to fine you.

Aloha David - I just saw your response today. You said to use a social media to get a hold of you, however I've had multiple emails and calls with the service center saying they refuse to refund the fee. I then have disputed it with the credit card company and the service center then said they could no longer talk to me as it is a legal issue. Although, they could easily refund it and I tell the credit card company it was resolved. The Avis department did not refund it and is defending their stance with the credit card company.

Christopher (Gatwick office) was the most helpful, friendly&informative welcome to the country. He stayed over an hour after his shift to greet me & ensure I got a car, as my flight was delayed 3 hours. Thanks to his incredible dedication I was not stranded at the airport but was sorted quickly&on the road to Brighton. I could not be more grateful for his over and above service and being so friendly about the delay as well. Thank you!

Very good experience. Check in was handled quickly and efficiently. Handover at the end was smooth. A special mention to Ivan who made the whole hand back quick and easy and even fetched a trolley for our baggage for our onward journey from Gatwick. All in all, not that much dearer than other companies, but certainly worth it in terms of hassle-free old-fashioned good customer service.

Took far to long to pick up car they make you do their work checking up license etc. say they will bring car round but don’t you have to walk around the return bay. MG car given not much cop chunky outside limited space inside. Seat at back position give hardly any room for passenger. Driver seat to small and not supporting the legs. No knobs so all settings have to be done via screen which is dangerous while driving.

I've used Budget/Avis car hire before (Prague, Pula) and I am happy I used their services again in London Gatwick. Smooth process and very friendly staff. The car itself was amazing and was fun to drive. Highly recommended.

Have to say, it really is a fantastically simple experience. Once you have a hire under your belt and have joined Avis preferred, it literally takes seconds to collect vehicle. Helpful staff and just a ridiculously easy and efficient experience. Impressed.
