There are plenty of car park spaces, a cafe and gift shop. The short (10 minute) boat ride can get chilly though so if it is grey you might want a good wind & waterproof. Can get a bit boggy on the island if the weather has been wet, so wear some decent shoes. The boats get round trip every 3/4 of an hour and there is a toilet on the island.
On the island there are plenty of tables with benches to enjoy a picnic (weather permitting, obviously) both outside and inside the castle.
Unfortunately you can't get to the top level in the tower, though. That would have given you some great views over the loch.
There are also toilets and baby changing facilities near the castle. I don't believe there are running water, though.
The only minus I can give the whole experience is the lack of toilets at the pier where you get the boat out to the castle. There is a restaurant, but they only allow patrons to use it, so you need to find the public toilet in the nearby park. These toilets costs 20p to use, and the missus said they were definitely not clean.
To get over to the castle, you have to get a boat over which only can take 12 people at a time and they run every 45 minutes to drop off and collect people back.
14 century tower and castle ruins with links to Mary Queen of Scotland imprisoned in 1567.
Looking around was amazing this small Island on a beautiful sunny day learning more about the place.
Lochleven Castle runs between April to September and opens at 10am. Best advice is to come and visit on a nice day day which you will enjoy yourself even better.
Once the boat collect you and takes you back to where you started, there is amazing cafe where you can get something to eat and drink.
Well recommended to visit with the family or just with friends its a nice little day out to enjoy yourself.
Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait for a boat so pre booking is a good idea however theres a few places to eat in the dock area whisly you wait.
Lochleven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven, in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300, the castle was the site of military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence (1296–1357). In the latter part of the 14th century, the castle was granted to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, by his uncle. It remained in the Douglases' hands for the next 300 years. Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned there in 1567–68, and forced to abdicate as queen, before escaping with the help of her gaoler's family. In 1588, the queen's gaoler inherited the title of Earl of Morton, and moved away from the castle. In 1675, Sir William Bruce, an architect, bought the castle and used it as a focal point for his garden; it was never again used as a residence.
