A lovely setting which is made better when there is good weather but still enjoyable anyway. Good views in and around the castle and there's also a nice footpath and cycle path you can take around the mainland shore.

There are plenty of car park spaces, a cafe and gift shop. The short (10 minute) boat ride can get chilly though so if it is grey you might want a good wind & waterproof. Can get a bit boggy on the island if the weather has been wet, so wear some decent shoes. The boats get round trip every 3/4 of an hour and there is a toilet on the island.

Beautiful, peaceful island. Make sure you prebook before you go. Luckily we arrived at the right time where some people hadn't turned up so we got to take their spaces on the boat. Lots of midges as to be expected by water so make sure you have some insect repellent. The boats leave every 45minutes which is basically enough to enjoy a thorough look round of the castle.

What more do you need to visit this castle....it has a lovely 10 min boat ride to the island where you get to view the surrounding landscape. Once on the island the castle is steeped in history and stories....you can really imagine what it was like there in the past. Its one of a few castles that you can explore freely from bottom to top and admire every detail. The views to mainland and the hills in the distance are also worth a look and space in your camera roll.

A nice wee castle on a wee island in Loch Leven. There isn't all that much to see, really, but if you find the Scottish history interesting, I definitely think it'll be worth it. The price includes the 10 minutes boat trip to get there.
On the island there are plenty of tables with benches to enjoy a picnic (weather permitting, obviously) both outside and inside the castle.
Unfortunately you can't get to the top level in the tower, though. That would have given you some great views over the loch.
There are also toilets and baby changing facilities near the castle. I don't believe there are running water, though.

The only minus I can give the whole experience is the lack of toilets at the pier where you get the boat out to the castle. There is a restaurant, but they only allow patrons to use it, so you need to find the public toilet in the nearby park. These toilets costs 20p to use, and the missus said they were definitely not clean.

visited Lochleven Castle on the 21st April 2018 for the first time, i didnt think this place existed as this small Island is very small in the Kingross area of Scotland.

To get over to the castle, you have to get a boat over which only can take 12 people at a time and they run every 45 minutes to drop off and collect people back.

14 century tower and castle ruins with links to Mary Queen of Scotland imprisoned in 1567.

Looking around was amazing this small Island on a beautiful sunny day learning more about the place.

Lochleven Castle runs between April to September and opens at 10am.  Best advice is to come and visit on a nice day day which you will enjoy yourself even better.

Once the boat collect you and takes you back to where you started, there is amazing cafe where you can get something to eat and drink.

Well recommended to visit with the family or just with friends  its a nice little day out to enjoy yourself.

This a great experience. Something different with a small boat trip to a beautiful little island with the small castle sitting prominently for all to see. It's not massive but it does have most of the interesting features you would expect. Allow at least the 45.inutes between boats but it's not to hard to use 1.5 hrs if you're interested in the subject. Their is quite a bit of wildlife about. I saw bumblebees and pheasant while I was there.

Amazing place to visit, you need to get a boat over to the actual castle but the guide will give you loads of great information on the way as well as answer any questions, be aware though that if your going during warmer weather midges can be ruthless especially when your on the island and they love tourist blood.

Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait for a boat so pre booking is a good idea however theres a few places to eat in the dock area whisly you wait.

Historic location and a nice way to spend an afternoon

Lochleven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven, in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300, the castle was the site of military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence (1296–1357). In the latter part of the 14th century, the castle was granted to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, by his uncle. It remained in the Douglases' hands for the next 300 years. Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned there in 1567–68, and forced to abdicate as queen, before escaping with the help of her gaoler's family. In 1588, the queen's gaoler inherited the title of Earl of Morton, and moved away from the castle. In 1675, Sir William Bruce, an architect, bought the castle and used it as a focal point for his garden; it was never again used as a residence.
