Abbot’s Staith is almost certainly the sole remaining example in the area, of a stone-built riverside storage warehouse. It’s quality of construction, detailing and scale – all point to a purpose built, expensively constructed Tudor building.

It is Grade II listed (Grade 1 when complete), on the National Buildings ‘At Risk’ Register, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Not only a rare combination, but also an indicator of it’s historical significance.

A couple of years ago, the Abbot's Staith Heritage Trust was formed by a dedicated group of volunteers came together to save Selby’s wonderful medieval warehouse – the Abbot’s Staith – from neglect. Fearing that, if nothing was done to save it, it would soon be beyond repair.

Now, through their sheer hard work and dedication they have excellent working relationships with all levels of local and national government, have set up an outreach programme for local schools and have formed significant links with local people and community groups. Aided by (with much thanks), the outstanding help of local business leaders.

The help the volunteers have received from the townsfolk of Selby has been truly breathtaking.

After a recent tour of the tired but beautiful building that can and will be a world heritage site can i thank you all so much for your time, effort, hard work and ideas – Selby needs to save this building and i urge everyone to support this group and do just that!

This could be such a wonderful addition to the beautiful buildings of Yorkshire but it needs a lot of help from the local authorities to make this an amazing tourist attraction and a useful building for the townsfolk of Selby!
