Chester has so many of its ancient ruins, hidden away out of sight beneath other historical buildings, in their basements and cellars, but these pillars stand proud in Northgate Street.

Ancient Roman history crops up in the most unexpected places in Chester! This sandstone pillar, three column bases and street guttering from the Roman fort of Deva Victrix were relocated to this busy square from other parts of the city. In November and December they are surrounded by the lively and colourful Christmas market. A plaque tells you more about them. Well worth a look.
