Absolutely awful.
Had just arrived when a member of staff let other people into our room. Waited an hour for burgers in the restaurant and they arrived in burned buns. Ordered and paid for drinks which bar staff forgot to bring to our table as they served other guests. Room was like an oven with no a/c. Toilet did not flush properly. Shower adjusted between very hot and scalding so ended up having a sauna. Breakfast was a scrum. Lack of plates and food ran out. Not enough staff to cope. Only good point was very good coffee.
We gave up and left instead of staying for a second night. Staff didn't even question early check-out.

A very average hotel which could be so much better.
The staff are great - but extremely overworked. I was part of a large group & there were 2 people to cover reception, bar and restaurant. This meant a long wait for everything.
The room was OK. The bed was comfortable and clean. However the shower was under-pressured & sockets only worked intermittently.
The food was also average and nothing you couldn't make in your own kitchen. They seemed to run out of menu items a lot, which was strange because we ordered them weeks in advance.
I got the impression that this hotel is trying to run with the least possible resources.

Pictures and first impressions weren’t too bad, but when we actually turned up at the hotel for a 2 night stay they had no record of our booking due to it being via a voucher service, despite booking it around 6 months prior, not ideal. Check-in therefore took around 15 minutes whilst a room was sorted for us as we propped up the front of house desk. Not what you want after work and travelling etc. We were offered a free drink from the bar for the inconvenience which was obviously appreciated, the staff were quite friendly and pleasant enough. When we finally got to the room it didn’t look like it had been cleaned (hairs all in the bathroom we had to clean it with wipes ourselves) and it was stuffy, no fan or air con and the window only opened a little way, probably to stop people from throwing themselves out. The bed was quite hard and springy and the pillows weren’t the best, more like paving slabs, shower was more of a trickle. Food not great, some items burnt and not of the best quality. We only managed the one night before checking out later that day. The general feel of the hotel was quite dull, depressing and tired. Likely understaffed and underfunded. Surprising that it’s even a 3 star really. Probably best avoided.

Very nice location with good rooms and well presented! Breakfast was a big let down. 8am and no Bacon/Hash browns/Eggs?
Waited til 08:30 and wasn't checked or replenished so had to leave for work having had just mushrooms and tomatoes on toast so a future note save your money and have breakfast elsewhere. Other than that have stayed before and would definitely return for accommodation. Good selection of beers and plenty of space to dine or relax

This hotel is fine. It is what it is, and at £15-£20 cheaper than Premier Inn close by that feels about right. Few marks and scuffs. Bathroom a bit dated, bed was clearly 2 single divans put together and you could feel the step between the 2. It was fine, would consider gong back but would be checking out Premier Inn first for the price differential.

Where do I start !! Room service is non existent this is our third night, no clean towels, bins not emptied. Staff not to be found when wanting a drink at the bar, had to go and find the girl myself chatting in the kitchen. Breakfast is well below par, cheap sausages bland scrabbled eggs , no bacon and no staff to replenish.. guest asked to clean egg up which was all over the floor, was still there half hour later. We never ate in the restaurant as other guests warned us not too, so ate In The crown down the road. They have a lot to learn regarding running a hotel. Tables left with dirty glasses and left over food, staff not interested at all. Will never stay here again.

Stayed here for work we worked nights so received no room service or attempt to give us clean towels or change our bedding. Food served after 5pm no vending machines for snacks.
Crown pub 5 mins walk away which has good quality food. No local shops.
Bar & reception not always manned so people are kept waiting.

The people are lovely. So helpful and kind. The insurance company put me in there for a week following a house fire. Clean, comfortable and as I said, wonderful staff. Only downside was there were no drawers in my room but they are renovating the rooms, so this may change. A small fridge in the room would make sense too.
Very difficult to get into central Colchester without a car.
