Fantastic place to stay. We went up for a weekend away for my birthday. We stayed in one of several of their cottages that look to have been converted from what was a Stables, giving each cottage character. They are beautifully laid out with the bedroom downstairs, 4 poster bed, en-suite, and the old stable door acts as the blind for the door. Upstairs you have the living area, with kitchen dining area and wood fire should it get chilly. The grounds of Ellen Hall where the cottages are well kept, clean, and there is ample parking. Including a large covered Barn if you want to keep your car out of the weather.
The owners were an absolute delight and couldn’t do enough to make the stay a pleasure. Recommending walks, local areas to visit and helping where possible.
One of the things id advise you to try if you stay here is the Hot Tub. It’s a wonderful place to relax, enjoy some hydrotherapy with a beautiful view of the wooded area to the back of the grounds where you can watch the many birds fly between the trees. (personally Id like to visit in Winter and see the snowy scene from the warmth of the tub)
Finally this is a dog friendly venue. There were several other couples there with dogs some of which had visited year on year for the last 7 years (which tells you everything you need to know about this place) Will definitely visit again (not just for the hot tub) as there was lots more to do than we managed in the weekend we were there.

Thanks Jo and Wayne for a wonderful stay

Stayed here for two nights, it was a nice quiet place with nice surroundings. The local pubs were nice and welcoming.

This was our second stay here and we we already can't wait for another trip. Jo is ever so lovely! The cottage is well equipped and with everything you need. We were initially disappointed that we couldn't use the hot tub, but all things considered, a wise decision and we were just so glad to have been able to visit the area again.
It is the perfect base for going out walking with the dogs, we went out to all sorts of places - Sale Fell, Ling fell, Buttermere, Loweswater....all just a short drive away!

Me and my fiancee stayed in Salkfield Cottage for 3 nights last week, everything was absolutely perfect.. The cottage was beautiful, and exactly as described. Although the weather on two of the days was horrible the cottage was so warm and cosy with the wood burner that if anything it added to the experience!!

Hosts helpful and accommodating and great location to explore from.

Would definitely fully recommend and we will definitely be back next year!

2nd visit to Ellen Hall this year, but a different cottage this time. Again a wonderful stay in such a lovely place. Our 2 dogs and us enjoyed the winter walking and coming back to light the log burner.
Cosy, warm, secluded and quiet...just how we like it.
Many thanks Jo and Wayne for another fabulous stay. We can't wait to come up again.

Jo is a lovely lady and great host. Really nice place to stay with nice gardens and a brook running through. Easy parking. Pub nearby, 15 min walk. Dog friendly stay. Cottage was lovely and had everything you needed plus a log burner for cosy nights if the weather's a bit cold. Will definitely return. Oh and a hot tub available for rental on site.

Really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend to anyone. Jo & Wayne were really helpful and friendly, the cottage was great and we loved that we could bring our dog. The cottages are in a great location and the hot tub was a lovely addition once we'd had a busy day walking and needed to warm up! Hopefully be back again soon!

Jo is such a lovely person and the converted stables are exceptionally dog friendly. There is a field the other side of the small stream that runs through the property where you can walk your dog and let them go about their business, and then there is a bin right outside the entrance to the Cottages for depositing their deposits, so it's all very clean
The property is actually a little way outside of Gilcrux and the sign reading Ellen Hall is difficult to spot at first. But, although you'll have to drive to your chosen spot, it's well situated for exploring the Lakes.
Our biggest complaint was that, for us, the bed was very uncomfortable. Soft to the point of the mattress trying to roll you over the edge if you moved in the night. And it was also a bit small. My feet were permanently over the edge (I'm 6'3") but that's all personal preference.
Other than that you can't go wrong. 👍
