I cannot praise Tony and Elaine enough for how amazing they are. They are both very friendly and attentive and are always willing to help you with anything, big or small. We usually stay in Horse Gin and it's always tidy and clean and perfectly prepared for myself, my husband and our 3 year son when we stay. The fresh homemade cakes and jam are delicious and is a lovely little touch. There are also plenty of leaflets to look through for ideas on what to do whilst staying in the Forest.

We have just returned from a wonderful two-night stay at Horse Gin cottage; it's been fabulous! Elaine & Tony made us feel so welcome, they were so hospitable and couldn't do enough for us - Tony was even worried when he hadn't seen us return from our bike ride and it was getting dark (we were having a great time at The Rising Sun pub!)
Bathroom & kitchen facilities were spot on, clean and well equipped and the bed, oh my gosh that was so comfy! Cakes, biscuits and homemade Plum jam greeted us on arrival, these were utterly delicious, sampled throughout our stay here!

Frankly, anyone looking to stay here should only take notice of one Ellie...we'll see you again soon!

Totally disagree with the negative comment left. We have had friends stay at Castlemain Mill and they were very impressed by the cottage on all level. Beautiful, clean and well equipped and the owners were very accommodating and friendly. I would recommend the cottage as a lovely retreat to enjoy the Forest of Dean.

I have just read that last review which I completely disagree with. We have known these business operators for a number of years and we have visited the accommodation. It has always been immaculate and the Hosts Elaine and Tony can never do enough.
We have met many visitors to Castlemaine Mill and all have been equally impressed.
I would recommend this accommodation wholeheartedly

No hot water on our first night. Everywhere thick with dust, even cooker hob had thick dust and cobwebs over it . Skirting boards, bed headboard even the lamps had thick dust on them. The chairs smelt musty. Dog hairs over the blankets on the chairs. The tissue provided was on the bathroom floor and was covered in thick dust and hair. My daughter dropped her black trousers on the floor and on picking them up they were thilthy. All our socks had to be binned as stained bad from the dirty floors.
We use a lot of holiday cottages and hotels and never seen anything like this . I did feel embarsssed for her at first now I’m More annoyed as she had tried to turn this around on me.
To think she bakes and sells homemade cakes and jam and sees nothing wrong with the thilthy condition of the cottage. Even the sofa stunk of dog urine

Hosts Tony & Elaine were excellent, cottage was very clean and comfortable .
Came stocked with basic essentials, tea, coffee, salt etc. Lovely free Lemon Drizzle cake on arrival. Very good guides on places to visit and forest trail walks. Pub at the bottom of road, and several others within easy reach through forest.

My Wife and I came for our Wedding Anniversary and a weekend away, this was no usual self catering break.

On arrival we were welcomed, shown where to park and to our accommodation.

In our accommodation was a home made lemon drizzle cake (amazing)

The facilities were beyond what we expected, bedding, tea towels, cleaning products, tea, milk, coffee, oil for cooking, toilet roll, all the basic essentials needed to start a holiday, with a washing facilities also available.

We were lucky to have great weather so took advantage of the gas bbq available for use to us!

The scenery was amazing, great for a walk, runners and cyclists.

For a cheeky break the Sun Rise Inn was there for a pint, great pub grub.

Thank you to Elaine and Tony, your welcome was unbelievable and you truly went out your way to look after us

We would highly recommend

We have visited this lovely place three times now. We have used both cottages and each was excellent. They are both of a high standard and most comfortable. We have stayed in tens of cottages and these rank easily along with the best. What sets Castlemaine apart, however, is the wonderful hospitality of Tony and Elaine. They are so helpful and friendly. In addition staying here is great value for money. If you like a peaceful place to relax and unwind we can recommend Castlemain whole heartedly. This is the most dog friendly place we have stopped at and our old Lab loves it here. The local walks and wildlife are most rewarding. The local pubs are fine and the staff are excellent. The café next to the post office is spot-on, if you want a cooked breakfast look no further, great ingredients and value. Coleford is a really good place to get your necessities, and the Rising Sun at Mosley Green is well worth a visit if you like decent beer and watching a kingfisher. A visit here does you good!
