Beautiful little country village

If you fancy living a quiet & easy life away from big cities with everyday rush or hassle, then Thirsk is a good place for you. Good shops & relaxed environment to chill.

A modern railway station on the scenic East Coast Main Line. Staff are friendly and helpful. Steam trains including those hauled by 60103 Flying Scotsman pass through from time to time.

I had incredibly heavy equipment on a trolley and was alone, and was told by the conductor to wait for the attendant who would be able help me get out of the station. There are no elevators on the platform for anyone with heavy bags, but there is a disabled access across the tracks- and it just so happened it was about to be used by a man in a wheelchair and his companion. Without even breaking his stride the attendant told me it was disabled access only and he couldn't help me. Because I physically can't lift my equipment as a whole, I had to disassemble the trolley and carry it all up and down a considerable flight of stairs, and because of the size of the equipment I couldn't hold on to the hand rail and it was pretty dangerous, not to mention I had to leave bags unattended on the platform which could have been stolen or confiscated. After I'd done almost all the lifting and become quite distressed at the situation, he came over and suggested I got someone to help me on the way back. Thanks mate yeah I'll just conjure someone next time good idea. I know it wasn't his job to help me, but he could at least have been a tiny bit sympathetic, and it felt very mean of him to practically ignore me, and to not let me cross at ground level as it was already being used and wouldn't have taken him any extra effort at all. If it's a station policy, then it's a stupid one. He was about as useful as a bra made of ants. Apparently this is quite an issue at thirsk station according to the taxi driver I spoke to afterwards, so I suggest not bothering to come to thirsk via rail with any heavy suitcases unless you fancy putting your back out.

Lovely town but if you're using the train service be aware that two train companies run services through Thirsk. They have different pricing regimes (not made transparent on the ticket machine) and one of them will sting you for a higher fare if you've bought a ticket for the other company and get on the wrong train. This experience put a damper on a lovely day out.
