My husband surprised with with a weekend away in Oxford got my birthday. This pub was authentic, quirky and right near all the best places to see.
The staff were so rude!! When we asked what drinks they had on tap, the guy behind the bar just about lifted his head to talk to us. He sighed and pointed at the one later they have on tap. Also he wasn’t rushed off his feet, he was checking his phone.
When my husband went to the loo, he checked with the girl behind the bar that struggled again to her head up. With an eye roll she nodded. She could even make a sound.
I have never felt so unwelcome before in a pub. I have worked in hospitality for years and never before would I even think about treating people this way. It ruined our day as we couldn’t stop talking about it.
Disgusted !

A small alehouse next to Blackwells bookshop, a favourite watering hole of "Inspector Morse" 5 cask beers on offer, wood panelling and floor throughout, the look is slightly spoiled by the new pine topped tables, which is not in keeping with what they replaced.

Fantastic proper pub. Morse drank here in an early episode. Real ale and atmosphere on tap.

Four stars is perhaps a tad generous but this place is an Oxford institution. Proper traditional pub, nice staff, good range of beers but at the time of writing, no chef therefore no grub. It'll need one to survive having not that long reopened and a few more punters to bolster the atmosphere.
But...go to this pub. It's proper Oxford

Lovely little pub with good traditional British beers. Had a particularly interesting and pleasant music play list on.

Good selection of Beers which isn't a bad thing & friendly barstaff in one of the smallest pubs In Oxford although there is now a fair few seats & tables outside too .
Ps I had one of the nicest ever Porter beers here👌🏻

Rude landlady & staff. I visited this pub with some old friends for Christmas (Saturday evening), but were approached by the landlady very rudely telling us to leave for starting to singing a Christmas carol. We were not being loud, and everyone else in our section of the pub joined in singing. They actually came to join us. Next thing, the landlady & 2 bar staff came over and took away our drinks, ordering us to leave. Their rudeness was the main problem, completely blunt and abrupt (we are all professionals, aged between 40 - 50ish), the bar staff then forced us to leave!! Thankfully everyone on the tables near us saw and heard how rude the staff were, and left too.

Small compact bar with friendly staff.
Hidden away down Broad St.
Great atmosphere.
