Absolutely fantastic day out. My son loved the 'Lost Castle' adventure playground, it's huge! The grounds are massive filled with summerhouses and tree swings. Perfect place to take your dog too. We loved it.

A really interesting place with a fascinating history. We love the plans and what they are doing with the grounds!

The adventure playground was vast and well built, amazing for kids and adults! Lots of grounds to wander through. The rarebit at the cafe was amazing as well as the ice cream. Definitely worth it for a day trip!

This place was so good! We arrived and the courtyard was beautiful somewhere to sit, eat, drink and use toilet facilities! The toilets were lovely and clean! The cafe was spacious and also clean. Lots of choice hot and cold food! The castle itself is just stunning we set off around the garden and found some little wooden houses which were like something out of a film I loved them! The different flowers rockery and views walking around just top it off! The scented garden was amazing! We then went into the woods on our quest to find the hidden castle 🏰 it was playground for the children to our surprise (we have no kids) but it looked ace! You can get food at the top near this too lovely hut under the low trees! Parking is free! You can get bikes to hire which we didn’t do but we are hoping to do that next time!

Another highlight of our stay in the Lake District. The castle and gardens are great to explore. Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. There is a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Also one of the biggest and best adventure playgrounds I've ever seen, our kids loved it!

Absolutely beautiful castle. There was an inside information exhibit going through the history of the castle with artifacts and picture. This let you out into the main ruin of the castle, it was breathtaking. Would highly recommend on a sunny day when you can walk around the gardens but if you go on a cold day there is a cafe with a wide selection of fresh cakes and got drinks as well as some food.

If local and going for food book one if the pod, they seat up to six and looked amazing.

The staff were friendly and a joy to speak with, I will definitely go back.

We visited this extraordinary place on a wet afternoon and had a great time (though it had stopped raining and there was some sun by the time we ventured outside).
The house must have been amazing in its heyday but the family lived so far beyond their means in the first half of the C20th that they went bankrupt in 1947 and the house fell into disrepair.
There is an excellent exhibition telling the story of the house and the family. The gardens are extensive and must be beautiful in the summer and there are miles of superb walks through the parkland.
You could walk round the park for free and visit their super cafe without going into the house or gardens.
