We live locally and have been to the Captains Club many times, mainly for special family occasions, i.e. birthday celebrations. The food and service in the restaurant has always been very good and encouraged us to want to return. However, our last visit with family was very disappointing. We just wanted drinks and snacks on the terrace by the river and when we arrived and sat down at a table, we asked a waiter to clear the table of food and drinks left by the previous people. A waiter cleared some of the glasses then didn’t return to clear the rest and clean the table, in spite of us having to go to the bar to ask again! After waiting half an hour and having paid for parking in advance, we decided to leave and go elsewhere. We would have understood the need to wait if the terrace and restaurant was busy but it wasn’t. I very much doubt we will visit there again, it was humiliating after recommending it to our family who were staying with us for two weeks. To have to wait for half an hour for a table to be cleared and cleaned is unacceptable.

Had a lovely evening spent at the captains club for our sons wedding reception, as always like every other visits we have made to the captains club over the last many years the service was wonderful.
We have always said the service staff are great from the minute we walk in we are always made to feel welcome.
UNFORTUNATELY,we have decided we will never be returning to the captains club after receiving our parking fine for leaving our car in a permit only bay?
Clearly not signed correctly as the car park was pretty empty on our day of visiting.
After a conversation with the captains club I received a clear and simple(I was told)we don’t get involved you should have checked where you park!
After the amount of money I paid to have a celebration here I felt there would have been at least some proof of my offence or at least a conversation.
Very unfortunate that you allow a private parking company to cheat your customers out of hard earned wages.
I feel you would benefit from looking into how many people no longer visit sue to this issue.
Even trust pilot is littered with this issue.
Very sad.
We are lucky enough to have a very wide choice of replacements locally.

Enjoyable relaxing stay; welcoming and helpful team in reception and the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Rooms well presented, modern and clean, and location on the side of the river is perfect for a relaxing stay, with lots of local shops and amenities easily walkable. Looking forward to our next visit!

Great place to kick back and relax. Short walk to the town where there are plenty of places to explore including restaurants, shops and pubs. The spa treatments and facilities were excellent and it goes without saying the view from the rooms are spectacular. Taking a long walk along the river stour is directly outside the hotels frontdoor. The restaurant was a great experience, staff were extremely friendly and the Sommelier was very knowledgeable. Would absolutely recommend!!

Beautiful location and lots of parking. Set next to the river and a short walk to green spaces and the castle/cathedral. It was busy at the weekend with guests and non residents but the staff coped admirably and with a smile. Seamless service at an event for 13 people. Food was divine, all the guests were happy. Faultless. Thank-you.

We stayed for New Year, something we used to do regularly before COVID. It was so good to be back and the New Year celebration was every bit as good as we remembered. A classy night with amazing food and entertainment.
The rooms, with their refurbished bathrooms were excellent. Even the weather eased up enough for the firework show and midnight.
All this topped off with excellent service from the wonderful team at the hotel.
We couldn't have asked for better.

I decided to book the Captains Club for dinner for my Dads 70th birthday this past Saturday. The venue itself is beautiful, in a really lovely setting next to the water, and the food was incredible.
The one part that made our visit so super special were the amazing staff! From the lovely receptionist who I threw a cake and balloons at during the day, to the fantastic restaurant manager and waiters/waitresses. Nothing was too much trouble, they were all incredibly friendly and were most certainly a credit to your business!
My Dad went away saying it was the best birthday meal he had ever had....in 70 years that's a pretty tall order!
Welldone to you and your staff, we will most certainly be returning 😊.
