Lovely old building, and grounds that show its history, a pleasant welcome at reception, room we stayed in was nice sized and adequate for our one night stay. Lovely choice for breakfast

You could tell that work still needs to be done to get back to a higher standard, but feel sure the owners will get there Ed and Gerry

We booked this as a group of groomsmen and the newlyweds to stay before and after the wedding. Hayley was an absolute angel and single-handedly got this 5 star rating sorted in one single night. The stay was already good but, on the wedding night Hayley opened the bar for the groomsmen and newlyweds well after hours and took care of our bride and groom with the best service she could give. And after they where sorted we had a lovely evening of drinking and karaoke under the watchful eye of Her. Thank you so much for an amazing few days. 🙏

Arrived at 9pm to an unclean room bedsheets dirty and screwed up beer bottles in room, bathroom unclean and shower gel bottles still in shower towel on floor ect!
Had to got to reception where the only poor bloke who was working had to then come an clean the room, he made an changed the bed but unfortunately the bathroom was left an I had to wet wipe that an the tables in the room myself which were covered in tea an coffee!
After a 3.5 hour drive with a toddler and an older child this was not ideal!
Breakfast was not great at all!
The hotel was tired an nothing like the pics!
I talked about a refund on checkout an was told I would get it an they would be in touch! I was phoned an told to write an email to which I have been ignored for days! I have phoned an left details 3 times since an no one has been in touch!
I will not give up!
But warning others to beware an avoid booking

Based on website we were very much looking forward to our stay in the family suite. On arrival reception staff very polite but our room which was in the conference annexe I was shocked at the very tired basic facilities but we decided it was 1 night and we were just using to sleep. In evening we we returned to bed down, discovered the headboard was practically falling off and the mattress just sunk on touch. I had no choice but to complain about the night receptionist was kind to give us 2 rooms in main house. The main house is gorgeous and has some original features but is in need of a million pound renovation. Current management I feel are doing it more harm than good by taking bookings, website raises expectations and reality is worse than budget hotel. Breakfast was no better, cheap poor quality. I recommend closing the hotel, renovating the main house and revamping the grounds and then reopening as a 5 star establishment. Could easily demand £350 a night then and will give enough revenue to update the annexe. In current state I would book holiday inn. I apologise for negative review but it's the truth.

This hotel needs cleaned. There are parts of the rooms that's never been cleaned. The dust inside the chandelier was revolting. Such a beautiful building with so much potential. Walls of the grounds have fell apart and are closed off with plastic tape which is following the walls.. Place has so much potential but clearly the owners couldn't care less. Will never stay here again.

It was cheap!
I have known this building from when it was a reform school in the 70s! The hotel that subsequently followed was superb ( as was its restaurant)
I haven’t eaten there since 2002 when it was perhaps up there with one of the best restaurants in Derbyshire?! We used to have staff Christmas parties there ( the last one when it went into receivership) they too were excellent!
With vision, I agree with a previous review, this is a £350 a night hotel…. HOWEVER….
For £41.25, it was cheap and served a purpose. The local reputation is extremely poor, hampered by its recent use as a hostel of immigrants. I have no clue why this hotel was chosen for this purpose.
The rooms are recently painted and clean, but dodgy wiring and plumbing need looking at! We personally wouldn’t have dared use the lift which looked like a blast from the 60s!
IF someone had large pockets and restores to its former glory, we would be prepared to pay much more and despite living only a mile away, would visit regularly!
The staff were extremely pleasant and eager to help!
2 crucial things needed - lighting outside, it’s extremely dark and old lights have been
Pushed over and damaged. The reception signage and directions to, need to be clear!
Ion its current state, it reminded me of a Chateau in occupied France circa 1942! It would provide a fab film location set

To start off I have to say the location and the hotel is wonderful. It's a beautiful building with loads of character and history. The breakfast was wonderful and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It would of got 5⭐ if it wasn't for the room itself. It was a large bedroom with loads of room and a nice comfy bed but! The lights would not turn on in the bathroom, bulbs were out in the bedroom and wallpaper was coming off by the window and big gaps round the window let the heat get out. I had to pull the curtains up and tuck on the window cill to stop the draught and keep the heat in. But I have to say it's a beautiful place to stay.
