I didn't hear from John for a while so I called to enquire as to how the car was getting on and was told that the air con which needed regassing was taking longer than thought. It wasn't until the middle of the following week that the car was ready and due to the delay, John kindly agreed to have the car dropped off. When arriving, John said that a low water light had come on while driving it to mine so he bought some water to keep it topped up. I thought this was strange as the levels were supposed to have been topped up in the service. He brought the rest of the water with him and for some reason it was SPARKLING. That can't have done the water pump any good to have sparkling water running through it. He also bought his dog for some reason that escapes me that had slobbered all over the interior. Why would you bring your dog to a car hand over?!
I should've said no right then and there and asked for my deposit back, but I saw through all this at a good car and handed over the almost £2000.
Things were okay for about 6 weeks after that when I got a call from my wife. The car had shown a low oil pressure light and she was forced to stop. I had to send out the RAC who towed her to her parents. It was a horrible situation as she was alone with our baby daughter for over 2 hours waiting for the RAC to turn up. The car was taken to a nearby garage where they recommended the oil pressure switch to be replaced which apparently would sort out the issue. I called John to tell him what had happened and he told me that the problem was nothing to do with the engine and so the 3 months parts and labour warranty was useless. After speaking to him at length to see what he could he agreed to have a look at the car but I would bear the cost. He also insulted my wife with sexist comments. I wasn't happy with this but I was more concerned about getting the car back home. The whole experience was very distressing for my wife and daughter, and I resented John for selling me such a bag of bolts.
Unfortunately changing the switch had no effect and the low pressure light came on and the car sounded very sick. So now I was almost £150 down as I had to get the car back and I was also faced with the possibility that John would have to make me pay for the work, despite it being under warranty.
I spoke to Trading Standards to see where I stood and they told me that if the vehicle wasn't fit for purpose then I had the right to return the car for a full refund. I rang John and told him this to which he came very irate and told me to get solicitors involved as I wasn't owed a thing. So much for customer service, he was all smiles and nice when buying the car but now somethings gone wrong he didn't want to know. If I was to get solicitors involved, they would need an independent opinion from a garage. So I took it to my local garage who for some reason couldn't find anything wrong with the car after extensive testing. I picked the car up from them and for the past month it's been absolutely fine. I couldn't understand it. When I left the car at the garage, it sounded like it was on deaths door but now it sounded as sweet as a nut. Maybe something in the oil pump had worked itself loose.
This was until about 2 weeks ago when the turbo failed completely, and after taking it back to a different garage again I was told that the faulty oil pump had caused it and it was a common fault.
I would love to tell John how his shocking behaviour has made me and my family feel, but what would it get me? Nothing. I now have a Citroen Picasso that's only good for spares or repairs to which I'm going to struggle to recuperate a fraction of the £2k that I have spent!
