For context, my JRT is just over 6KG, not even 6.5KG. Recommended dosage on the licensor's website for 6kg-18kg dogs is ½ tablet-1½ tablets. A whole tablet being the dosage for a 12KG dog. My little JRT was prescribed 1 whole tablet 3 times a day, which is twice the recommended dose.
In stead of listening to the logic regarding the scaling of doses this vet just kept talking over me, stating he hadn't prescribed a harmful dosage and that his dosage was within the licence. Never mind the fact that if I hadn't been savvy enough to realise this was in fact way too big of a paracetamol-based tablet to give my little dog and she would've been taking twice the recommended dose, I paid for twice the amount of tablets that I needed to buy which I think this is what it really comes down to for them. Whether it is enough of an overdose to kill her or not, it is an unecessary amount of painkiller for such a little dog.
And for the record, I am qualified in animal management and welfare and I am trained in animal first aid. I can safely administer and calculate dosages for painkillers, sadly I just need a vet to prescribe them. My old vet had the common sense to discuss these things with me rather than talk over me. It is just a shame I had to move away.
The staff are very helpful and caring, the vet was brilliant.
Here are just some of the issues I found (there's a lot more I could say about this place):
- none of the vets showed any interest in my cat's notes from when I adopted him, which struck me as unusual - you'd think to best treat an animal this would be useful to see
- when I brought my cat in for urgent treatment, I'm not convinced the vet listened to (or at least could understand) a word I told him, and he failed to properly explain what was wrong with my cat, even after he was discharged. It was just 'he's stressed', over and over again I was told this
- in the nine days my cat was there for treatment, I only got to visit him once and despite it clearly having a positive impact (his condition improved within a day of my visit), each subsequent visit planned was ultimately cancelled. The clinic clearly take on too much work or are their operations are too inefficient to cater for visits
- the day after I collected my cat, I got a call saying they'd forgotten to give me a medicine that was vital for his recovery and I needed to collect it ASAP
- the treatment cost ended up being more than double what I was originally quoted. No one during my cat's stay mentioned that the price would be so much more. When I raised this I was told I should have asked (i.e. it was my fault for not questioning if my bill was massively increasing on a daily basis). Several times I have requested a copy of the original quote I signed and no one has sent it
- I was charged over £120 for treatment that they did not give - only because I questioned it did they admit this was an error. To demonstrate how they overcharged me, I was shown another customer's file (full name and amount owed, among other things). When I calmly raised my concerns about the bill, the vet became aggressive and repeatedly talked over me in a threatening way
- it was only in a follow-up appointment with a different vet that I had my cat's condition explained and my concerns listened to
- my cat's final appointment was with a specialist who diagnosed heart conditions that none of the others had noticed, and it's clear from our conversation that he could have been saved if he had been given better treatment before
- much of the above was highlighted to the manager in my complaint, the response was dismissive and the manager failed to address any of my concerns in any meaningful way.
There are certain staff at the clinic who are really great at what they do. But I feel like it's a gamble to take your pets to a clinic that isn't sufficiently staffed and the standard of treatment so variable. I wish I had taken him to a smaller, less busy clinic with more experienced staff.
I cannot thank all the staff at Nantwich Pet Vets in both Crewe and Nantwich especially Al. Professional, caring, informative and the knowledge and support provided is first class. I trust this company completely with all of my animals. I cannot recommend them enough.
