The Purple Dog is a pretty nice pub. Considering the location it's rather quiet and the staff and locals are lovely. That said, I've only frequented the Purple Dog on the odd occasion, however I've had a good time every time I've been there.

Very kind and attentive staff! We had some hard time to find a place for a drink (coming from London) and it seemed like they couldn't give a table for us, but even after rejected, they shouted out for us to come back as a table freed. Bit cold bar but food was excellent and the prices are reasonable. Highly recommend it!

Great menu with tasty food and friendly staff. Good selection of beers and also decent outside area with heaters and it's located nicely in the middle of town.

Had Sunday roast. Food was so very tasty. Plenty of it too. Will definitely call again.

Exceptional service, good food, reasonable prices, and very dog-friendly.

I come here often for lunch and have been on a few occasions for drinks after work. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the service is quick. I'm a fussy eater and they kindly cater to my requests without rolling their eyes!

It has a real old-pub feel inside but is clean and well kept. There are definitely loads of regulars here, which says a lot in a town full of pubs and restaurants.

There is an outside seating area, which is unbearably hot sometimes due to the plastic cover overhead - but it's a nice place to sit otherwise.

The main reason I keep coming back is because it's the best place to eat in town with a dog. The staff all seem to be animal lovers and he is always given a bowl of water and a treat. Unlike other places that 'tolerate' dogs, I feel like they're actually pleased to have him there! It makes such a huge difference to me that he is welcome, as he is with me for my lunch breaks five days a week. Thank you for this.

Terrible roast dinner - would not recommend

I have been here many times before with my husband and friends for drinks, but we had never tried the food. Decided to stop in late afternoon for a Sunday roast. Pictures on previous reviews looked amazing. Sadly it was very disappointing. Had the roast chicken, chicken was fine, that was about it. Vegetables overcooked and mushy, roast potatoes not crispy (looked like bit of burnt crispy outer had been removed, so left with a boiled potato essentially), cauliflower cheese in a pot and not cooked (Raw cauliflower , cold cheese) and a Yorkshire pud that anyone should have been too embarrassed to put on the plate, as it was a soggy flat undercooked pancake.

Giving 2 stars purely for bar Staff and atmosphere. Will be back for drinks, not for the food!

Large city centre pub, very quiet on the evening we popped in. Mid January and on a Monday, so that was no surprise.
