However, the experience was tainted by two things:
- I was asked if I was sure if I wanted a "stouty-thing" when I ordered a beer. Although I had drunk a different kind of beer before that, I'm not sure the language "stouty-thing" would have been used if I were a man (even if the language "nitro stout" had been used to check I knew what I was ordering - I did! - it would have felt less patronising...)
- a regular's dog was allowed to wander around without a lead on. Seemed a good-natured dog, but that's not really the point. We had our dog on a lead under the table with a chew, which the other dog clearly had their eyes set on (as dogs often do when in range of something tasty, so not the dog's fault!). It took too long for the owner to call their dog away, & keep their dog away. Although our dog wouldn't have been visible (as he was under the table & we were on the other side of the pub to the owner), the other dog had returned to our table a number of times...
Why didn't I speak to the owner?
Well, it wasn't just him who was OK with his dog wandering. He was in a group (albeit a small one), and was very friendly with the staff, who were also fine with the wandering dog - so I quite simply didn't feel that was something I could do.
