Warwick and Warwick were from the start professional, friendly and efficient, making sure that expectations were tempered by explaining that the collectors valuation based on "catalogue" values, is invariably far higher than the true market value which would only be realised at auction. They were helpful and made themselves available to explain directly to my wife's disgruntled siblings who were expecting "hundreds of thousands", why there was such a discrepancy between catalogue value and market value.
The collection was subsequently valued at around £24K with one specific album making up £20K of that total. The collection was vociferously marketed, with presentation in their sale catalogue and W&W contacting their extensive worldwide network of buyers . Note that as they are on a competitive commission rate, it is completely in their interest to maximise the sale price achieved, which then reveals the true value of the collection.
My wife and I logged into the online auction relayed from the auction rooms, and were thrilled along with the W&W staff to witness the reserve price exceeded by over 60% at £38K, with the main album making £13K over the reserve of £20K.
Warwick and Warwick have a reassuring mix of vast knowledge and contacts in what is in essence and "old world" environment, along with up to date marketing/online auction facilities to get in front of as many potential buyers as possible.
I therefore have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending them for the valuation and sale of stamps.
We left a substantial collection of model railway items: several locomotives, a lot of rolling stock, track, signals, controller, unassembled buildings etc. from East Germany (Piko DDR) prior to the wall coming down.
They were all unused and in pristine condition although some of the boxes were damaged.
As we were unhappy with the ‘buy’ offer and the auction estimate we decided to collect.
When they were brought to us it was quite obvious that they had been treated with scant regard. Boxes were further damaged and it would appear that they had been dropped. Quite a number of the higher value items were badly damaged and some had pieces missing rendering them unsaleable.
Our mistake was not to have photographed everything before we took them. When we explained that some items were missing they actually found another box. Unfortunately we still feel that a couple of items are missing.
They did admit their liability, offered an apology and some compensation but this experience has caused some distress and upset as the items had been carefully stored for over 40 years.
We left our items in good faith with complete trust that they would be well cared for. It’s hard to believe what has happened. Under no circumstances could we recommend this auction house.
