Firstly, the staff are lovely and really helpful, so didn’t want to leave too bad of a review.

However, Nationwide’s policies made it impossible for someone like me, a foreigner moving to the UK for work, to open a basic bank account.

To prove your address, you are required to provide a utility bill that has come in the post. It cannot be a printed bill under any circumstance. It is 2022, the vast majority of billing and correspondence is paperless these days. So if you are moving from abroad, you will likely need to wait a month or so if you want to open an account with nationwide.

The only exception to this is a letter from your GP, and good luck getting that sorted within anything quicker than 2/3 weeks.

Also, the fact that a private tenancy agreement is not considered valid proof of address is also ridiculous - but this seems to be standard with British banks and not a Nationwide-specific policy.

I decided to go to another bank who do take printed utility bills as proof of address. I applied for an account with them online and had it approved with an hour - account number and sort code received and everything.

It’s a shame that Nationwide could potentially miss out on new customers due to archaic and bureaucratic policies.

So hard to bank with these guys. One branch in virtually the whole of Bristol and is open for about 4 hours on a Saturday morning otherwise you have to take time off work just to pay in a sodding cheque

This is my Mums local branch. She’s elderly and gets muddled sometimes so prefers to actually speak to someone face to face. I’m so impressed with the Staff here who are clearly under a lot of pressure. Vicky is brilliant. She took the trouble to phone me even though I’m not a customer and today was so reassuring and gave me and my Mum clear instructions about how to manage the account
