However, Nationwide’s policies made it impossible for someone like me, a foreigner moving to the UK for work, to open a basic bank account.
To prove your address, you are required to provide a utility bill that has come in the post. It cannot be a printed bill under any circumstance. It is 2022, the vast majority of billing and correspondence is paperless these days. So if you are moving from abroad, you will likely need to wait a month or so if you want to open an account with nationwide.
The only exception to this is a letter from your GP, and good luck getting that sorted within anything quicker than 2/3 weeks.
Also, the fact that a private tenancy agreement is not considered valid proof of address is also ridiculous - but this seems to be standard with British banks and not a Nationwide-specific policy.
I decided to go to another bank who do take printed utility bills as proof of address. I applied for an account with them online and had it approved with an hour - account number and sort code received and everything.
It’s a shame that Nationwide could potentially miss out on new customers due to archaic and bureaucratic policies.
Satisfied customer.
