Didn't stay at the hotel or even eat, we just had a drink. Was recommended by our taxi driver as he said they has just had a big refurbishment. It was really lovely inside, very cosy feel to it. All the cocktails we had were pretty good. Music was nice and chilled and the speaker they had was really cool. Will be going back next time I'm in town. Maybe will have dinner there next time.

Service for drinks & food was v. slow. Average wait of 45 minutes for breakfast. Dinner service v. slow and portions on the small
side. Room clean but more pillows put in once asked. Room very warm with just a fan to help circulate air. Staff polite but seemed to lack direction from any management. No one asked how are stay had been.

Unfortunately I was disappointment with our stay in April. The reason for the delayed review is i have been waiting for a response from the hotel, Which i have never received - 5 months on i have still heard nothing!!

It was booked as a valentine gift from my partner, so we could have a kid free evening and uninterrupted sleep. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case as we were woken at 4am by a fire alarm and had to evacuate the building.

Now obviously I understand the seriousness of a fire alarm and sometimes it cannot be helped but it worries me that the reason for the alarm may have been from the room next to us smoking cannabis.

On arrival at 5.30 as soon as the lift doors opened on level 3 the smell was overpowering. I commented to my partner about the smell and we presumed someone may have just arrived also. - we went out enjoyed our night and came back about 9pm - again the smell was still very strong. We also noticed outside on the balcony our next door neighbours always had their door open and the smell was very obvious.

I’m very surprised that a member of staff didn’t patrol the hotel and notice this smell!? Surely this would have been flagged up if a walkabout had of happened? Does someone from The George hotel not come and patrol the hotel at all?
do feel had this of been the case the evacuation could have been avoided.

We just went for evening entertainment. The decor is amazing, so quirky and a tad different. Perfect for a night when you wish to just catch up with friends, have a special drink at the bar or even grab some tasty food...though booking is recommended for the later.
Bar staff are brilliant and well versed in up selling drinks!!!

We absolutely loved our stay here! The hotel is stunning. The decor of the bar and restaurant is beautiful and the rooms are found after walking through the historic corridors. The location is perfect for exploring Colchester Castle park and museum- just behind the hotel- as well as the shops and restaurants. Breakfast was great and the bar had a lively atmosphere in the evening (service was quite slow at the bar would be my only negative feedback). Hotel staff always went above and beyond, from the cleaners to the reception staff. We would love to come back :)

Didn't stay at the hotel but there's no Google maps listing for the restaurant/bar.

Very nice bar area, nicely decorated building, pleasant staff.

Avoid the restaurant though, it's next to a lounge area which is often very crowded and loud which spoils the atmosphere. Ate and was charged £5 more for a very mediocre risotto than the price listed on the menu, and was charged the same for a lemonade as you could buy a pint of beer elsewhere. One vegetarian main dish on the menu, as if it's still 1970.

Will come back for drinks but definitely not food.

Enjoyed a lunchtime meal with friends (6 of us).
We all had good food, although one person's was cold!
They were busy and service was very slow.
One of our party was in a wheelchair and we had to lift him up 2 steps and down 3 to get to the table.

The George Hotel itself looks stunning but unfortunately I was carted off to an old takeaway for my stay in one of the hotels apartments. I stay away often with work, and as you will see from the pictures, there is no way this justifies £320 for two nights.

The apartment was freezing cold (no central heating) and really dated. There were no nice finishes of note and it was quite noisy. There was an unlocked door, where there was quite a drop down to the bottom floor of the takeaway, which would have been quite dangerous for a family with young children.

I’m glad I was on my own and nobody else had to share this experience with me!
