This sculpture is to commemorate St Kyneburgh’s Well.

The tale of St Kyneburgh is a little confused: There was an Abbess of the monastery, Thought to be related Osric king of the Hwicce, but the legend is about a namesake.

A young girl ran away from an arranged marriage and was taken in by a baker in Gloucester, as a maid. His wife became jealous and killed the girl; throwing her body into the well. Needless to say, it was not long before her act was discovered, but thereafter the water of the well was found to have healing properties and the girl was made a saint. Perhaps one of the first examples of the benefits of inoculation.

The sculpture can only really be appreciated by looking up from below.

Nice to have sculptures in city not only for memorial or remembrance but easy to memories the places too. As I been there from London so good to remember this place by this sculpture. It’s more than a CD rack or a plate holder. It is what it is.
