Found this place on our travels. Food was amazing, beef dinner and the wife had a lamb dinner. Can't fault the food. Great prices and the amount of meat you get was spot on. Highly recommended.

We visited last night after the polar express experience. Not only are they offering 10% off for passengers but their service is second to none. The menu was beautiful and although with my food allergy I wasn’t able to have much off the menu they created a meal that was wasn’t on the menu without any quibble. We were blown away by the whole team there. Credit to the managers and chefs who obviously care and love their jobs. We will be returning even if it’s a special drive out there. A real gem that we found last night. Hats off to all the team at the railway inn! Thank you!

Six people for Christmas Dinner and had an absolutely fantastic experience. The team worked so hard to ensure everyone was looked after for both food and drinks. All courses were served hot and were delicious. Most had Turkey diners, but I braved the beef wellington, which was amazing. So glad I did. The beef was the perfect level of rare and succulent. We were not rushed off the table and were able to enjoy the full experience and relax.
Most of all, they were really accommodating around two people with allergies. Making a gluten free cheese cake was really appreciated.
We’ve eaten here a couple of times before and not had a bad meal. I’ve had the steak before which again was perfect and very reasonably priced. We’ve also dropped in for a few drinks and had a great time. The owners are both really welcoming and are keen to look after their customers, even when busy.
It’s good to have a place to go where the level of food drink and environment are lovely without it being over priced. This is a gem that needs supporting.

Been wanting to try our local establishment since it reopened, against the bad reviews we read prior to visiting, we went along as a treat before heading onto the polar express.
Firstly, staff have no idea what drinks are available, they have you pop around the bar to ‘look for yourself’, however, after ordering, turns out they had no ale on at all. None. Same goes for mulled wine, we ordered 3 but were then told by staff 10 minutes later they only had enough to do 1 small portion.
Food took over an hour to arrive, so I’m glad we booked the meal 2 hours before the train. Portions were small for what we paid for. We ate from the express menu, which I’ve read here since is smaller portions, although it doesn’t state this anywhere on the menu that I saw? I’d rather have a larger meal & not get 10% off for having a train ticket. And something I can’t believe I’m even having to comment on, they had run out of tomato sauce….essential with fish & chips, especially as there’s no tartare.
The Polar Express has been on for a month now, please don’t blame that for these issues. If we had been made aware of no ale/mulled wine we would have eaten at the station instead and not spent over £100 here. I messaged the establishment 2 days before regarding a separate query to which I had no reply.
So sad, because this place was amazing back in the day. Hopefully there’s a reasonable explanation, because after all, we do want to support our local establishments, but based on tonight, we would not return.

Loved it. Went for Sunday lunch after we left our grandsons bag there after visiting Polar Express and we needed to use the facilities. We rang up and they kept the bag in a safe place until we visited. The Meal was lovely and super quick service. Thank you

I visited on NYE with my husband, 3 year old & our baby. We got a very warm welcome & Gav, the owner was so friendly & chatted with my toddler which she loved. The atmosphere in the pub is warm & friendly. The decor modern yet cosy.

The NYE menu was just amazing. Plenty to choose from. All came out within a reasonable time (everything’s cooked fresh) & was hot & delicious. My toddler chose from the kids menu which has plenty of options.

Gav & Niki (the owners) both came over to check everything was good with the food.

I also needed to change our baby shortly after we arrived & Niki was so helpful, setting up the changing station for me.

We had an amazing time & can’t wait to return.

Facilities
- car park
- baby changing facilities
- outdoor seating with large umbrellas for cover
- there is a ramp for the first few steps up to the pub but there is then a few steps through the door. Not sure if there is disabled/pushchair access through the back. Best to contact the pub to check.
- right next door to Churnet Valley Railway Station
