We turned up and there was a dog event on which wasn't advertised and we're made to pay £3 parking because of the event otherwise it had been free. A little annoying seen as how we didn't go anywhere near the dog event as I'm scared of dogs and wouldn't have gone at all if id known. The castle has loads of sections shut off and hasn't been maintained in a very good standard as in some areas they have used standard house bricks to patch sections completely ruining the look and not maintaining the original style. Took about 10 minutes to see what you were allowed to walk around and then we had a quick walk on the grounds and were done within an hour. Wouldn't go again.

Amazing place, the staff were so helpful and friendly. The lady that served us was more then happy to tell us the history of the castle. If you buy a travel cup at £10 you get free refills all year, brilliant offer. No charge to visit but a donation can be given. Toilets also on grounds. Nice easy walk and brilliant for dogs. Will visit again.

Free to visit and free parking on site. The castle itself isn’t big but it’s very pretty and the view on top of the hill is stunning. On the way to the castle you walk past a forest and it’s very scenic. Nice gift shop too!

Interesting nature trail with good surface, (left just past gate) or straight on uphill to the castle. Good visitor centre with things to see, plus various sections of armour to try on. Hot sausage rolls and cold drinks/ice creams available.

It was so great lovely long walk up (there’s a short way to ) great for dogs. It tells you all about the castle and how it was used over the hundreds of years all about the history there’s a shop (that’s a little over priced 🤫)
. The shop does these swords that are 13 £ but they do birthday parties and there’s a little museum inside of shop to there’s also ice cream and lolly’s .

Awesome, free parking was a great starter…..
greeted by a lovely knowledgeable lady in the visitor centre, again free entry reliant on donations for their upkeep and to improve the visitor experience. Indoor exhibition were hands on…. With a great model of the castle. Great history, This prominent vantage point and strategic site was quickly recognised by the Normans, who built a huge timber fortress here by 1100 AD .
it was a lovely sunny ☀️ day so did the trail with lots of information boards explaining various eras and stages of development and destruction. Amazing that it was habited until recent 70 years I think, must pay more attention 😂 Thank you so much. Donations can be made within the centre or online

This castle is considered one of the best surviving examples of Norman earthworks in the country.  Its not very big but the view on top of the hill is stunning. Staff at the visitor centre were very welcoming and very knowledgeable about the whole history surrounding this castle.

Free entry and car parking but your donation is welcome.
