Such a wonderful, old building with bags of character and a stunning waterfront view. Room was extremely clean and welcoming - photos (taken late at night) don't do justice to how well presented and nicely dressed it was. Friendly and helpful staff and what a delicious full English breakfast, freshly cooked to order with every element absolutely perfect. Would have appreciated being able to have more coffee after breakfast but was informed that the kitchen was closed which was a pity as would have liked to enjoy the mild morning with a bit more caffeine sitting outside. Other than that, nothing to grumble about and plenty to praise.

We had booked a few rooms as our son was getting married at high house which is nearby. Had a fantastic time. Thank you to all for great welcome and service. Everyone enjoyed. Thank you. Look forward to coming back for lunch or dinner soon.

Stayed for 1 night as was at a wedding in the area.
Car park is so small so don't expect to park, however, even though its was an August Saturday afternoon when we arrived, the street parking was fine & free with no time restrictions
The pub is beautiful old cosy style & right on the river. Staff were friendly & helpful.
We stayed in Room 6 which is a twin ensuite with car park view. It was a good size & reasonably clean, with comfortable beds & decent pillow & duvet. However for the price, id expect modern facilities, the room had 70s miss matched furniture, the bathroom had tiling from 70s/80s & where it hadn't been refurbished for decades there was limescale on taps, the sink plug area had erroded away & there had been a crack/break from previous on sink that had been filled back together again! There was also no hairdryer in the room.
I'd visit the pub again for food & drinks if I were to be in the area, however, not stay there unless the price was significantly reduced

Yes, it's a nice pub in a brilliant position on the River Crouch.

However, if you're staying in their rooms above the pub, it's a totally different world. Totally and absolutely dire in every sense of the word. It obviously has never had any money spent since the 1970s. We're talking yellow stained polystyrene ceiling tiles, veneered doors, faded beige walls, carpets and furniture. Yes, some wardrobe handles and drawer handles were in place, but not all.
Filthy carpets, rusting window frames, just breathtakingly awful. The rooms aren't ensuite and believe me you'd be ashamed to wash your dog in the bathroom, curling mildewed lino, shower attachments to bath taps and cheap plastic curtains around the bath that stick to you when you try to shower. No pack of shower gel or shampoo to greet you as a guest, take your pick of Aldi or Lidl's half empty bottles left by previous guests.
An air conditioning or refrigerator compressor kicks in every few minutes to ensure that if the tower clock in the main street chiming every 15 minutes doesn't keep you awake, it will. I can't comment on the food as I was so desperate to get away the next morning, I left without the breakfast I'd paid for.
An indicator of the service is that when I asked the lady behind the bar if there would be any discount for not taking breakfast. Her answer was just one word.
NO.
I'm not a grumpy miserable complainer by nature, but I'd be ashamed I to take anyone here.

Very pleasant stay, nice friendly welcome, nice room, great breakfast ( and service) thanks for the tip regarding poaching eggs. The Wednesday special pie, chips and a pint was exceptional value, the meatiest pie I've had ever!

With a group of friends, placed in the room behind the bar. Nice & cosy. We ordered from The Fish Weekend Menu. Excellent choice for us all other the Moules had run out.

This hotel is in an historic harbourside property, hundreds of years old. As such, it is absolutely oozing with character features such as interesting fireplaces, beamed ceilings and several quirky floor levels. The stories these rooms could tell!

We're glad we paid a little extra for the superior family room 4 and our bay window looks out directly over the Crouch estuary about 10m from the sea wall. We have everything we need here and this morning's breakfast was delicious.

Thanks to the friendly staff for your cheerful service and we'll be back.
